A Tick Bite on Your Toddler: Staying Calm and Taking the Right Steps

Frequently asked

When the days get warmer and families spend plenty of time outdoors, little explorations in the grass are simply part of the fun. Children love to discover nature with all their senses. Sometimes, however, your child might bring home an uninvited guest: a tick. Here you will learn how to stay calm in this situation and remove the tick safely, supporting your child in the best possible way.

What to know about ticks

Ticks love to hide in tall grass, dense underbrush, or shady bushes. They do not fall from trees, but are brushed off blades of grass or leaves as you walk by. When your child roams through nature, these tiny arachnids can get onto the skin. Once there, they often wander around for quite a while to find a particularly warm spot with good blood circulation. They frequently settle in the backs of the knees, at the hairline, behind the ears, on the neck, or in the groin area.

A tick bite itself is usually completely painless. The tick's saliva contains a type of natural anesthetic, which is why the bite goes unnoticed at first. It is highly recommended to thoroughly check your child's entire body after every trip into the greenery. The sooner a tick is discovered and removed, the lower the chance of any potential pathogens being transmitted. Especially in spring and summer, when nature calls, this evening ritual becomes a valuable routine for the whole family.

Practical tips for handling ticks

  • Stay calm and provide comfort: It is completely understandable to feel a bit startled when you spot a tiny dark dot on your child's skin. Take a deep breath. Your child senses your mood very clearly. If you stay relaxed, it will be much easier for your child to hold still during the removal.
  • Prepare the right tools: It is best to use a special tick card, a tick twister, or fine-tipped tweezers from the pharmacy. Grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible. It is important not to squeeze the tick's body, as this can cause more saliva to enter the small wound.
  • Pull slowly and steadily: Pull the tick out gently and straight up. Avoid frantic or strong twisting motions, as parts of the tick might tear off and remain in the skin. Supposed home remedies like oil, nail polish, or glue are not helpful. They cause enormous stress to the tick and actually increase the risk of infection.
  • Clean the bite area: After successful removal, clean the spot with a mild wound disinfectant suitable for toddlers. Praise your child generously for holding still so bravely. A colorful bandage with their favorite character can often work wonders and quickly comforts them after the little scare.
  • Keep an eye on the skin: Watch the bite area over the coming days and up to six weeks afterward. A slight, localized redness right after the bite is a typical, harmless reaction of the skin. It can be helpful to take a photo of the spot to easily compare any changes later.
  • Consult your pediatrician: If a growing red ring forms around the bite, the redness swells significantly, or your child develops an unexplained fever, contact your pediatrician. Even if the tick cannot be grasped properly or you feel unsure, seeking medical advice is always a good decision.

Summary

  • Thoroughly check the entire body after every outdoor adventure.
  • Pay special attention to warm areas like the backs of the knees, groin, and hairline.
  • Pull the tick out straight and slowly using an appropriate tool.
  • Disinfect the bite area and monitor it over the following weeks.
  • Visit your pediatrician if you notice a spreading red ring or a fever.
