Preparing the Perineal Area for Birth: Gentle Care

Frequently asked

Preparing for birth is a special time filled with anticipation and small steps to tune your body and mind. Gently caring for the perineal area is one way to help prepare the tissue for the upcoming delivery. Here you will find ways to softly integrate this care into your daily routine, provided it feels right for you.

Basics of Perineal Care

The perineum is the area between the vagina and the anus. During birth, this tissue stretches significantly to help your baby enter the world. Regular care, often starting around the 34th week of pregnancy, can help support the natural elasticity of the tissue. Many expectant parents find it reassuring to actively prepare for delivery in this way.

Perineal massage promotes blood circulation and helps you develop a better sense of this sensitive area. You learn to consciously let go and relax, which can be very helpful during labor. At the same time, it is completely fine if you decide against this type of preparation. Every body is different, and there is no strict path you have to follow.

Practical Tips for Your Routine

Choose a suitable oil: Use a natural, plant-based oil without artificial additives or perfumes. Almond oil, olive oil, or special perineal massage oils from the pharmacy are often excellent choices. These oils nourish the skin and keep it supple.

Create a calm atmosphere: Take your time and find an undisturbed space. A warm bath or a warm compress beforehand relaxes the tissue and makes the care routine even more pleasant. Dimmed lighting or soft music can help you enjoy the moment in a relaxed state.

Find the right position: Many pregnant individuals find it comfortable to sit in bed with their legs slightly bent or to prop one foot on the edge of the bathtub. Squatting or sitting on a birthing ball are also popular positions. A small hand mirror can help you get oriented at first.

Start gently: Wash your hands thoroughly beforehand. Apply a little oil to your fingers. Many use their thumb to gently stretch the tissue in a U-shape downwards toward the bowel and to the sides. Hold this stretch for a brief moment while breathing deeply and calmly.

Listen to your body: The touch can be noticeable but must never be painful. A slight pulling or tingling sensation is often described, but real pain is a sign to reduce the pressure. If you are unsure or experience any discomfort, it is best to speak with your midwife or obstetrician.

Summary

  • Perineal care is a voluntary, gentle preparation for birth.
  • Natural oils support blood circulation and the elasticity of the tissue.
  • A relaxed atmosphere and a comfortable position make the practice easier.
  • Conscious breathing during the massage helps you practice letting go for birth.
  • If you have pain or questions, your midwife or doctor is the right person to contact.
