They develop their own strategies to solve small practical problems. They might look at the workpiece from different angles, switch tools, or change their grip. These problem-solving skills are closely linked to motor development and show how strongly cognitive and physical processes intertwine.
Additionally, spatial awareness expands. Before your child connects two pieces of wood or folds paper, they plan the process in their head. They consider which tool is needed and in what order the steps must occur. This action planning becomes increasingly routine through repeated trial and error.

How to support
You can wonderfully support your child's growing independence and dexterity in everyday life without turning it into a formal training program. The best support often consists of creating opportunities and signaling trust.
Offer real, suitable tools: Plastic toy tools often do not work properly, slip off easily, and quickly cause frustration. Instead, offer small, real tools that fit well in children's hands. A light hammer, a small Phillips screwdriver, fine pliers, or sharp but rounded scissors make the first real crafting steps enormously easier. When the material works, working is fun.
Leave room for own experiences: Bent nails, crooked cuts, splintered wood, or excess glue are absolutely part of the learning process. Hold back on quick interventions and let your child figure out how best to hold the tool. If you are asked for help, you can slowly demonstrate a movement. After that, quickly hand the task back to your child. Doing it themselves is irreplaceable.
Find shared projects in daily life: Involve your child in real, everyday tasks. This could be assembling a small shelf, tightening a loose screw on a kitchen chair, or fixing a flat bicycle tire.
