Long before birth, your child's brain begins to actively learn and store its very first memories. A fascinating cognitive milestone is habituation, where the unborn baby gets used to recurring stimuli. The baby intentionally filters out unimportant stimuli to save valuable energy and create capacity for new impressions. This process of filtering stimuli forms the foundation for all future learning after birth.

The child also reacts much more calmly to recurring touches or movement patterns over time. A gentle, rhythmic jiggling of the belly during exercise or the steady rocking of a brisk walk is recognized as a familiar pattern. It then often has a soothing and lulling effect rather than a waking one. The child stores these physical experiences as safe constants in their small world.

The meaning of first memories

The ability to habituate is closely linked to the development of short-term and long-term memory. When the baby stops reacting to the vacuum cleaner, it proves that they remember the sound from yesterday or the day before.

These early memories are, of course, not comparable to our conscious memories of past events. It is a so-called implicit memory. The child does not remember the vacuum cleaner as an object, but rather the acoustic pattern and the associated experience of safety.

This unconscious learning is a wonderful protective mechanism of nature. It prevents the child's nervous system from being overloaded by the constant flood of stimuli. At the same time, it optimally prepares the baby for the loud, colorful world outside the womb.

When your child is finally born, they will encounter a world full of bright lights, cool air, and countless new sounds. The ability to get used to stimuli will help them enormously in the first weeks of life to process all these impressions. Babies who have already learned to tune out everyday noises in the womb often find it easier to sleep peacefully, even in a slightly noisier environment.

Typical timeframe

The development of the senses is very fluid and happens for every child at their very own pace. Hearing often develops around the middle of pregnancy to the point where the first sounds from the outside world are perceived in a muffled way.

Conscious habituation to stimuli is something many expectant parents observe increasingly in the last trimester of pregnancy. Often, this happens in a period between the 28th and 32nd week of pregnancy.

During this phase, the nervous system is already highly interconnected, and brain waves become more complex. The brain can now classify stimuli much better and retrieve memories over a longer period. Some babies show these amazing learning processes a little earlier, while others take a little more time for this step.

How to support your child

You can support this fascinating development in everyday life wonderfully and relaxedly, without having to complete a special training program.

Allow everyday noises: You do not need to keep your environment artificially quiet during pregnancy. The clattering of dishes, animated conversations, the radio, or street traffic help your child get to know the real soundscape of their future family. They benefit from storing these stimuli as safe right now.

Talk to the baby: Your own voice is the most formative and important stimulus for your child. Speak, hum, or sing regularly in quiet moments. The baby gets used to the individual sound and the melody of your speech. They will immediately recognize these familiar sounds after birth and find them deeply soothing.

Involve partners: The voice of a partner also plays an important role. If this voice is often heard near the belly, it is also anchored in the child's brain as a familiar and safe stimulus. Take moments together as a couple to communicate with the child.

Create recurring rituals: A specific musical toy placed on the belly in the evening or a gentle stroke at the exact same time of day is quickly recognized by the child as a familiar pattern. Such gentle rituals give the unborn child orientation and a feeling of security.

Model relaxed reactions: If you remain inwardly calm yourself at a sudden, loud noise, your body does not release stress hormones. Your child feels this biochemical calm and indirectly learns that the situation is safe and there is no reason to be upset.

Enjoy your own observations: Take time now and then to consciously feel inward. Pay attention to the occasions when your child becomes particularly active and when they remain quiet. These small observations strengthen the bond long before the first eye contact.

When to seek medical advice

The movements and reactions in the belly are as individual and unique as the child itself. There are naturally quieter days when the baby sleeps a lot, and very active phases with many kicks.

However, if you notice that your child's movement patterns change suddenly and drastically over a longer period, or if fetal movements stop altogether, it is always a good idea to have this checked out promptly.

During pregnancy, the gynecologist, obstetrician, or attending midwife are the primary contacts for all your observations and concerns. For later questions about the child's sensory processing after birth, your pediatrician is always there to help.

A brief medical conversation or an uncomplicated examination usually brings certainty very quickly and calms the nerves. Always trust your own gut feeling if something seems unusual or out of place to you.
