Saving allowance for a larger wish is a classic example of this forward-looking thinking. They weigh options, compare possibilities, and begin making strategic decisions for themselves.

Typical timeframe

How to support

You can wonderfully support this exciting cognitive development in everyday life without setting up a rigid learning program. Even small changes in communication help your child further unfold their connected thinking.

Think out loud together: When your child asks a complex question, do not immediately give the finished answer. Instead, ask them what they suspect. Puzzling together and coming up with personal theories enormously strengthens analytical thinking.

Make everyday systems visible: Use everyday situations to explain processes. Cook together and discuss how heat changes the ingredients. Repair a broken object together, or observe how roads and bridges guide traffic during a walk.

Plan projects from start to finish: Encourage your child to organize small projects themselves. This could be planning a trip, planting a small bed on the balcony, or organizing a playdate. In doing so, your child learns to coordinate various steps with foresight.

Play strategic games: Board games, card games, or chess are wonderful tools for connected thinking. Your child practices planning several moves in advance, assessing the actions of other players, and bearing the consequences of their own decisions.

View mistakes as part of learning: If your child's plan does not work out, it is a valuable lesson in systemic thinking. Calmly and kindly discuss where the chain was broken. This is how your child learns to analyze processes and adjust them next time.

Some school-aged children find it very difficult to organize sequences of actions or recognize logical connections in everyday life.
