How to support your child
Even though the startle reflex is an understandable and healthy reaction, many parents want to soothe their baby after a sudden twitch. With small, loving gestures, you can convey a sense of safety to your child.
- Gentle touch: If the baby becomes restless after a loud noise, simply place your hands gently on your belly. The warmth and gentle pressure often have an immediate calming effect and show the baby that they are safe.
- Talking to the baby: The voice of the pregnant person and those of the closest caregivers are familiar to the baby. After a startling moment, speak to your child in a calm, deep voice. The familiar sound helps the baby relax again.
- Conscious relaxation: If you get startled yourself, your body releases stress hormones that the baby also perceives. Take a deep breath in and out after a loud noise. Your own physical relaxation transfers directly to the child.
- Adjusting everyday life: You do not have to frantically avoid noises in everyday life. Everyday environmental sounds train the hearing. However, if you notice that your baby becomes extremely restless during very loud movies or concerts, you can reduce such environments a bit in the last months of pregnancy.
- Music for balance: Play or sing gentle songs regularly. These positive acoustic stimuli form a wonderful counterbalance to sudden, loud everyday noises and promote the baby's well-being.

An occasional startle at loud noises is a wonderful sign of your baby's healthy development. It shows that the senses are awakening and the brain is actively working. However, if you notice that your child's movement pattern suddenly changes drastically or the movements stop completely over a longer period, it is always advisable to contact your gynecologist or midwife. They can use an ultrasound or fetal monitor to check that the baby is doing well.
