They must understand how a straight string turns into a three-dimensional loop. Parents often see their children looking at their hands with deep concentration, trying to mirror the movements they have seen adults make onto their own shoes. This process of observing and imitating is a tremendous cognitive achievement.

Often, this phase begins with a great curiosity for adult shoes. Your child might start pulling on your shoelaces to see how the knot comes undone. This untying is an important first step. It helps the child understand the mechanics of a bow in reverse. Soon after, they will make their own attempts to wrap strings around each other. This often results in wild, tight knots that the child presents with great pride. This joy of experimentation is a valuable part of the learning process. Your child is exploring the texture of textiles and grasping how friction and tension work together to hold a knot in place.

Last but not least, tying shoes is a milestone in emotional development. It is very common for the laces to slip out of their fingers repeatedly, or for the loop to spring open at the last moment. Take the pressure off and give time

The morning rush before kindergarten is usually not the best moment for the first attempts at tying shoes. Offer your child the opportunity to practice when you are both relaxed and have no pressing appointments. A quiet afternoon on the weekend is a wonderful time to sit down together and try out the hand movements without any hurry.

Use stories and imagery

Many children learn complex movement sequences best through little stories. The well-known bunny ears method, where two loops become two bunny ears that cross and slip through a cave, is very popular. Such vivid narratives help the brain remember the sequence of abstract movements much more easily.

Start with large materials

Small, slippery shoelaces are often too difficult for beginners. You can make learning easier for your child by initially working with thicker, easy-to-grip materials. A wide gift ribbon wrapped around a pillow or two thick cords of different colors make it much simpler to understand the structure of the knot. The different colors also help the child visually distinguish the right and left strings more easily.

Let their hands be free

Adults often tend to grab the child's hands and perform the movements for them. For motor learning, however, it is usually more helpful if the child controls the movements themselves. Instead, sit next to or behind your child and slowly demonstrate the movements on your own shoe. This allows your child to observe the steps from the same perspective and try to imitate them independently.
