Airy Puff Pastry Apricot Butterflies

Baking with kids12+m 30 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Honey

Introduction

These airy puff pastry apricot butterflies bring joy to the family table and are wonderful for baking together. The soft apricots provide valuable vitamins, while your child practices fine motor skills by playfully arranging the toppings. This quick recipe delights little ones and adults alike.

Ingredients

  • 1 roll of fresh puff pastry (refrigerated, approx. 275 g)
  • 150 g mild quark (or plain whole milk yogurt if quark is unavailable)
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (honey only for children 12 months and older)
  • 1 pinch of real vanilla powder
  • 1 small tin of apricot halves (unsweetened or in juice, drained) or 4 to 5 soft fresh apricots
  • A splash of milk for brushing

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius standard (180 degrees Celsius fan) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Unroll the puff pastry and cut it into small squares (about 8x8 cm) using a pastry cutter or knife.
  3. Mix the quark, honey, and a pinch of vanilla in a small bowl until you have a smooth, creamy filling.
  4. Place one teaspoon of the quark mixture in the center of each pastry square and spread it slightly.
  5. Arrange the drained or fresh apricot halves on top of the quark to look like two butterfly wings.
  6. Lightly brush the edges of the puff pastry with a little milk.
  7. Bake the butterflies in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Let the pastries cool completely on a wire rack and check the temperature before serving so your child does not burn their mouth.

Variations and Tips

  • Fruity Alternatives: Instead of apricots, soft peach slices, halved strawberries, or small apple pieces work beautifully in this recipe.
  • Storage: These butterflies taste best fresh but will keep in the fridge in an airtight container for up to two days.
  • For the Whole Family: Adults can dust their portions with powdered sugar or sprinkle toasted sliced almonds on top after baking.
  • Freezing: Baked puff pastry often loses its crispness when thawed, so freezing is not recommended for this specific recipe.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten (puff pastry) and dairy (quark, milk). Introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any potential reactions. Only use honey for children 12 months and older, as it poses a risk of infant botulism for younger babies. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's diet, always consult your pediatrician.

Nutrition Information

Apricots are a wonderful source of beta carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A to support healthy vision. The mild quark provides valuable calcium and protein for bone growth. At the same time, the puff pastry offers quick energy for active toddlers.
