Autumn Pumpkin and Lentil Puree for Little Foodies

Seasonal5+m 25 min 4 VeganEasy

Sweet Hokkaido pumpkin meets mild red lentils in this autumn dish. This combination offers a wonderful plant-based source of iron for your child. A splash of rapeseed oil rounds off the meal and ensures a soft consistency. Many children really enjoy the slightly sweet taste of the pumpkin.

Ingredients for the Puree

  • 100 g Hokkaido pumpkin (organic if possible)
  • 30 g red lentils
  • 150 ml water
  • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil (canola oil)

Preparation

  1. Wash the Hokkaido pumpkin thoroughly, cut it in half, and remove the seeds. Cut the pumpkin into small, even cubes.
  2. Rinse the red lentils in a fine sieve under running water.
  3. Place the pumpkin cubes and lentils together with the water in a small pot. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Let it simmer gently over medium heat for about 15 minutes, until the pumpkin and lentils are very soft.
  5. Add the rapeseed oil and blend everything with an immersion blender until you reach a very smooth, creamy consistency with no chunks.
  6. Let the puree cool down and always check the temperature before feeding.

Variations and Tips

If your child is already used to fruit, a spoonful of mild applesauce goes wonderfully with this dish. The vitamin C from the apple helps the body absorb the iron from the lentils even better.

For storage, the puree can easily be poured into small ice cube trays and frozen. This way, you always have a suitable portion ready. In the fridge, the fresh puree keeps well in a sealed container for about two days.

If parents want to share the meal, the base can easily be adapted for adults. A little salt, pepper, and a pinch of curry powder turn the baby puree into a delicious side dish for the grown ups.

Safety and Introducing New Foods

It is often best to introduce new ingredients one by one and in small amounts. This gives you time to observe how your child reacts. Waiting a few days between new foods is a common approach.

Milk remains the main source of nutrition in the first year. This puree is a gentle addition to breastfeeding or formula. Salt, sugar, and raw animal products are completely avoided at this age. Honey is also not suitable for children under twelve months.

If you have any concerns about introducing solid foods, please consult your pediatrician. They can provide personalized advice for your family.

Nutrients for Development

Red lentils provide valuable plant-based protein and important iron. Pumpkin is a popular vegetable for starting solids, as it is mild and easily digested. The rapeseed oil provides energy and helps with the absorption of vitamins.
