Autumnal Beetroot and Apple Fritters for Toddlers

Seasonal12+m 33 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Egg

Introduction

These autumnal beetroot and apple fritters bring wonderful color to the plate and spark curiosity in many children. The combination of earthy vegetables and sweet fruit is exceptionally mild and ideal for the family table from 12 months. At the same time, picking up the soft fritters helps your child practice their fine motor skills in a playful way.

Ingredients

  • 150 g beetroot (raw or precooked)
  • 1 medium apple (e.g., Gala or Fuji)
  • 1 egg (medium size)
  • 4 tbsp rolled oats (fine)
  • 2 tbsp spelt flour
  • 1 pinch of cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp canola oil (for frying)

Preparation

  1. Peel the beetroot and the apple, then grate them finely.
  2. In a bowl, mix the grated mixture thoroughly with the egg, oats, flour, and a pinch of cinnamon.
  3. Let the batter rest for about 10 minutes so the oats can absorb the moisture, creating a smooth mixture.
  4. Heat the canola oil in a pan over medium heat.
  5. Drop small spoonfuls of the batter into the pan and press them flat.
  6. Fry the fritters for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  7. Let them cool down well before serving and always check the temperature before your child takes a bite.

Variations & Tips

  • Feel free to swap the apple for a mild pear to gently vary the flavor.
  • For parents, these fritters can be beautifully enhanced with a pinch of salt, pepper, and some feta cheese.
  • The fritters will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.
  • They are also excellent for freezing. Simply place a piece of parchment paper between the fritters so they do not stick together.

Allergy & Safety Information

  • This recipe contains egg and gluten (oats, spelt), which are common allergens.
  • Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor any potential reactions.
  • Beetroot can turn urine and stool a reddish color, which is completely harmless.
  • If you have any concerns about your child's diet or potential allergies, please speak with your pediatrician.

Nutrition

  • Beetroot and oats provide valuable plant-based iron, which is important for healthy blood development.
  • The vitamin C from the apple helps the body absorb this iron optimally.
  • Additionally, the dietary fiber from the spelt flour and fruit supports smooth digestion.
