Bake Fluffy Potato Yeast Hedgehogs
Introduction
These soft potato yeast hedgehogs are a wonderful treat for little explorers aged twelve months and up. The cooked potatoes in the dough keep the rolls particularly moist and easy to chew. Kneading and shaping the dough together also helps develop your child's fine motor skills in a playful way.
Ingredients
- 150 g floury potatoes (cooked and cooled)
- 250 g wheat flour or spelt flour
- 100 ml lukewarm milk (cow's milk or plant-based alternative)
- 10 g fresh yeast
- 1 tbsp soft butter or canola oil
- 1 tsp honey (only for children over 12 months)
- A small pinch of salt
Preparation
- Mash the cooked potatoes very finely with a fork or a potato masher until no large lumps remain.
- Pour the lukewarm milk into a bowl and dissolve the fresh yeast and honey in it.
- Add the flour, soft butter, pinch of salt, and mashed potatoes to the yeast milk.
- Knead everything for about five minutes until a smooth, pliable dough forms.
- Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes until it has visibly doubled in size.
- Divide the dough into six small portions and shape them into oval rolls.
- To make the hedgehog spines, use clean kitchen scissors to snip small points into the back of the dough.
- Place the hedgehogs on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat) for 15 minutes until golden brown.
- Let them cool completely before serving and always check the temperature inside to ensure it is safe for your child.
Variations & Tips
- Vegetable Variation: You can easily swap the potatoes for cooked sweet potatoes or pumpkin puree.
- Storage: The hedgehogs will stay fresh in an airtight container in the fridge for two to three days. They also freeze beautifully and can be quickly warmed up in the toaster.
- For the Whole Family: Adults can slice their hedgehogs open after baking and enjoy them with savory cheese or sweet jam.
- Adjusting Texture: For younger children, you can lightly brush the crust with water right after baking to make it even softer.
Allergy and Safety Information
This recipe contains wheat (gluten) and dairy, which are among the most common allergens. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts.
Caution: Honey is strictly off-limits for infants under twelve months, as it can contain dangerous bacteria. Avoid using whole nuts for decoration, as they pose a high choking hazard.
If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods or potential allergies, it is best to speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Potatoes provide valuable complex carbohydrates that give your child long-lasting energy for the day. The flour and milk contribute important protein and calcium, supporting healthy bone development. The combination of these ingredients creates a filling and nutrient-rich meal.
