Baked Apple-Cinnamon Rings in Spelt Batter
Introduction
A cozy autumn dish for when the first apples are ripe. The rings are baked in the oven, making them wonderfully soft and lower in fat for little ones. The combination of spelt and apple provides plenty of energy for active afternoons and makes for a lovely shared snack.
Ingredients
For 2 to 3 servings, you will need the following ingredients:
- 2 large apples (sweet varieties like Gala work well)
- 100 g spelt flour (light or whole grain)
- 100 ml milk (or oat drink)
- 1 egg (organic preferred)
- 1 tsp cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon)
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp canola oil (for the baking sheet)
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (standard bake). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and brush lightly with canola oil.
- Peel the apples and remove the core with an apple corer. Slice the apples into rings about 1 cm thick.
- Whisk the spelt flour, milk, egg, cinnamon, and baking powder in a bowl. Stir until a smooth, creamy batter forms.
- Dip the apple rings one by one into the batter, let the excess drip off, and place them on the baking sheet.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes until golden brown. Flip the rings halfway through the baking time.
- Let the finished apple rings cool down completely. Always do a temperature test before serving, as the fruit inside can stay hot for a long time.
Variations & Tips
- Fruit Variation: You can easily swap the apples for thick slices of pear for a different flavor profile.
- Storage: The rings stay fresh in the fridge for about 2 days. They also freeze wonderfully and can be quickly reheated in the toaster.
- Texture: For younger siblings, you can lightly steam the apples before baking to make them even softer.
- Family Tip: Adults often enjoy sprinkling a little powdered sugar or chopped walnuts on top of the warm rings.
