Bunte Focaccia-Gartenlandschaft mit Gemüse backen

Baking a Colorful Focaccia Garden Landscape with Kids

Baking with kids2+y 90 min 4 VeganHard
Contains: Gluten

Baking this colorful focaccia is a wonderful experience for children aged three and older. Kneading the dough together and creatively decorating it with vegetable motifs supports fine motor skills and playfully sparks an interest in different types of vegetables. Parents and children can create little edible works of art that not only look fantastic but taste delicious.

Ingredients

  • 300 g spelt flour (Type 630 or all-purpose)
  • 200 ml lukewarm water
  • 1/2 cube fresh yeast (approx. 21 g) or 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 pinch of mild salt
  • 1 red bell pepper (cut into strips for flowers)
  • 1 yellow bell pepper (for a sun)
  • 100 g cherry tomatoes (halved)
  • 1 handful fresh herbs (e.g., parsley, chives, rosemary)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil for brushing

Preparation

  1. Crumble the yeast into the lukewarm water and stir well until it has completely dissolved.
  2. Place the spelt flour, two tablespoons of olive oil, and a pinch of salt in a bowl and pour in the yeast water.
  3. Knead everything into a smooth, supple dough that no longer sticks to your hands.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes until it has visibly expanded.
  5. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, transfer the dough, and invite the children to press it flat with their fingers.
  6. Arrange bell pepper strips, halved tomatoes, and herbs to form colorful flowers, trees, or a sun on the dough.
  7. Carefully brush the finished landscape with a little olive oil.
  8. Bake the focaccia in a preheated oven at 200 degrees Celsius (approx. 400 degrees Fahrenheit) for about 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let it cool completely and check the temperature before serving.

Variations & Tips

  • Try different vegetables: Zucchini slices, sweet corn, or mild olives are excellent for adding more landscape elements.
  • Storage: The focaccia keeps in the fridge for about two days and freezes beautifully in individual slices.
  • Adjusting texture: For younger siblings, you can lightly steam the vegetables beforehand so they are extra soft after baking.
  • For the whole family: Adults can enhance their half of the dough with a little garlic, coarse sea salt, or chili flakes.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains wheat or spelt (gluten), which is a common EU allergen. Introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to monitor for any reactions.

If adding nuts or seeds, use only finely ground versions, as whole pieces pose a choking hazard. Honey is not suitable for children under 12 months. If you have any uncertainties about nutrition or introducing solid foods, please speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

The colorful focaccia provides valuable complex carbohydrates from the spelt flour, offering lasting energy for active days. The fresh vegetables contribute important vitamin C and dietary fiber, which support healthy digestion. Through the olive oil, your child also consumes valuable unsaturated fatty acids that are important for healthy development.
