Baking a Traditional Linzer Torte with Raspberry Jam
Introduction
This recipe for a small Linzer Torte brings a wonderful aroma to your kitchen and is ideal for baking together from age three. Kneading the dough supports fine motor skills, while the nutty flavor appeals to many children. It is a lovely way to spend time together and gather early baking experiences.
Ingredients
For a small springform pan (approx. 18 cm, yields 2 to 3 generous child portions):
- 100 g spelt flour
- 100 g finely ground almonds or hazelnuts
- 75 g soft butter
- 40 g raw cane sugar
- 1 egg (organic)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 pinch ground cloves
- 100 g raspberry jam (preferably reduced sugar)
Preparation
- Mix the flour, finely ground nuts, soft butter, sugar, egg, and spices in a bowl. Knead everything into a smooth dough and let it rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius and grease a small springform pan. Press two thirds of the dough into the pan and pull up a small edge.
- Spread the raspberry jam evenly over the base. Roll out the remaining dough, cut it into strips, and place them as a lattice on top of the jam.
- Alternatively, your child can use cookie cutters to punch out stars or hearts and place them on the torte. This is often very enjoyable and encourages creativity.
- Bake the torte for about 25 to 30 minutes until the dough is golden brown. Allow it to cool completely before serving and check the temperature of the jam before eating.
Variations & Tips
- Fruity Variation: Swap the raspberry jam for unsweetened applesauce or plum puree.
- Storage: The torte keeps in an airtight container in the fridge for about three to four days. It also freezes exceptionally well in individual slices.
- Texture Adjustment: For children who love to nibble, you can roll out the dough a bit thinner and bake it as crispy cookies.
- Family Tip: Adults can elevate their slice with a dollop of whipped cream and a dusting of powdered sugar before serving.
Allergy & Safety Information
This recipe contains the allergens gluten, egg, dairy, and tree nuts. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions. Only use finely ground nuts for young children, as whole nuts pose a choking hazard. If you have any uncertainties regarding the introduction of solid foods or your child's diet, please speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
The ground nuts provide valuable unsaturated fatty acids and plant-based protein, offering energy for active days. Spelt flour often contains more fiber compared to wheat, which supports a happy tummy. The reduced amount of sugar makes this cake a more mindful choice for special occasions.
