Baking Classic Vanilla Crescents with Children
Introduction
Classic vanilla crescents are a wonderful part of the festive season. Kneading and shaping the dough brings immense joy to many children from three years onwards, playfully supporting their fine motor skills. The finely ground almonds also provide valuable fats for little baking fans. This makes the pre-Christmas period a cozy experience for the whole family.
Ingredients
For about 2 to 3 portions (approx. 20 to 30 small crescents), you will need the following ingredients:
- 140 g all-purpose flour (organic if possible)
- 100 g soft butter
- 50 g finely ground almonds
- 30 g powdered sugar
- 1 egg yolk
- For coating: 2 tbsp powdered sugar, 1 packet (or 2 tsp) vanilla sugar
Preparation
- Place the flour, soft butter, ground almonds, powdered sugar, and egg yolk into a mixing bowl.
- Quickly knead everything with your hands until a smooth dough forms.
- Wrap the dough in cling film and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius (conventional heat).
- Shape the dough into small rolls, cut into thumb-thick pieces, and bend them into small crescents.
- Place the crescents on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake for 10 to 12 minutes until light yellow.
- Mix the remaining powdered sugar with the vanilla sugar. Let the cookies cool briefly, then gently roll them in the sugar mixture while still warm.
- Allow them to cool completely before eating to ensure nobody burns their mouth.
Variations & Tips
- Nut variation: Instead of almonds, finely ground hazelnuts or walnuts work beautifully for this recipe.
- Storage: Stored in an airtight tin container, the crescents stay fresh for up to three weeks.
- Freezing: The raw dough freezes exceptionally well. Simply let it thaw overnight in the fridge when needed.
- Adjusting texture: For younger children, the crescents can be shaped a bit thicker and baked slightly shorter so they remain softer.
- Family tip: For adults, you can refine the dough with a pinch of cinnamon or a little lemon zest.
Allergy & Safety Information
This recipe contains wheat (gluten), milk (butter), egg, and tree nuts (almonds). Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to carefully observe any potential reactions. Ensure nuts are always finely ground for young children, as whole or chopped nuts pose a choking hazard. If you have any uncertainties regarding allergies or introducing new foods, please speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Ground almonds provide valuable unsaturated fatty acids and plant-based protein. These nutrients wonderfully support the active daily life of toddlers. Because this recipe contains sugar, it is intended as a special treat for the holiday season.
