Baking Fruity Thumbprint Cookies with Raspberry Jam

Baking with kids2+y 35 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Egg, Tree nuts, Sugar

Introduction

Fruity thumbprint cookies with raspberry jam are a wonderful baking project for little helpers. Children from around three years of age often love rolling the dough and pressing a small well into it with their thumb. Shaping the cookies together playfully strengthens fine motor skills, while the fruity filling brings joy to the kitchen.

Ingredients

For about 2 to 3 portions (one small baking sheet), you will need:

  • 150 g spelt flour
  • 50 g finely ground almonds
  • 70 g soft butter
  • 40 g fine raw cane sugar or coconut sugar
  • 1 small egg (organic if possible)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 tbsp raspberry jam (preferably reduced sugar)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius (conventional) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Knead the spelt flour, ground almonds, soft butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla extract in a bowl until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Roll the dough into small balls (about the size of a walnut) and place them on the baking sheet with a little space in between.
  4. Your child can gently press a small well into each ball using their thumb or the handle of a wooden spoon.
  5. Fill the wells with raspberry jam using a small spoon.
  6. Bake the cookies for 12 to 15 minutes until they are lightly golden brown.
  7. Let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack. Please test the temperature of the jam before letting anyone taste them, as it gets very hot in the oven.

Variations & Tips

  • Fruity variety: Swap the raspberry jam for applesauce or mild apricot preserves for a different flavor profile.
  • Storage: Stored in an airtight container in a cool pantry or fridge, these cookies keep for about one to two weeks. The raw dough can also be frozen in small portions.
  • Texture adjustment: For younger siblings, you can omit the almonds and replace them with a bit more flour to create a softer texture.
  • Family tip: Adults often enjoy a pinch of cinnamon or grated lemon zest in the dough for a more complex aroma.

Allergy & Safety Information

This recipe contains wheat (spelt), egg, milk (butter), and nuts (almonds), which are common allergens. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to monitor for any reactions. For young children, only use nuts in a finely ground form or as a smooth butter to minimize choking risks. If you have any uncertainties about introducing new foods or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutrition Note

Spelt flour and ground almonds provide valuable dietary fiber and healthy fats, offering lasting energy for active days. The berries in the jam contribute a touch of vitamin C. At this age, baking is primarily about the joy of exploring foods and creating something together.
