Baking Funny Hedgehog Yeast Rolls with Kids

Baking with kids2+y 100 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy

Introduction

Baking these funny hedgehog rolls is a wonderful experience for children aged three and up. By kneading the soft spelt yeast dough and snipping the little spikes, your child playfully trains their fine motor skills. A savory baking adventure that looks delightful, smells absolutely wonderful, and invites parents to join in the fun.

Ingredients

  • 250 g spelt flour (ideally organic)
  • 150 ml lukewarm milk (or an unsweetened plant-based alternative)
  • 10 g fresh yeast (or 1/2 packet dry yeast)
  • 1 tbsp canola oil or soft butter
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • A few raisins for the eyes

Preparation

  1. Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm milk and let it rest briefly.
  2. Place the flour, oil, and a pinch of salt in a bowl, then add the yeast milk.
  3. Knead everything into a smooth, supple dough and let it rise covered in a warm place for 45 minutes.
  4. Divide the dough into four to six equal pieces and shape them into oval rolls that are slightly pointed at the front.
  5. Place the shaped hedgehogs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let them rest for another 15 minutes.
  6. Use clean kitchen scissors to snip small spikes into the dough and press two raisins deeply into each face as eyes.
  7. Bake the rolls in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius (standard top and bottom heat) for about 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before serving, and always check the internal temperature before offering them to your child.

Variations & Tips

  • Small variation: You can knead some finely grated carrot or zucchini into the dough to make it even moister.
  • Storage: The rolls will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days.
  • Freezing: They freeze beautifully and can be quickly reheated in the oven or toaster when needed.
  • For the family: When baking for adults, you can enhance the dough with a little bread spice or roasted onions.

Allergy & Safety Information

  • This recipe contains gluten (spelt) and dairy if cow's milk is used.
  • Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.
  • Raisins can pose a choking hazard for very young children, so chop them finely or omit them if younger siblings are joining the meal.
  • If you have any uncertainties about diet or possible allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Spelt flour provides valuable complex carbohydrates and fiber, ensuring long-lasting energy for active play. Additionally, spelt contains important plant-based iron and B vitamins, which support your child's overall development. The gentle preparation with minimal salt creates a nutritious, everyday snack for the whole family.
