Baking Homemade Pretzels with Kids
Introduction
Baking together brings joy to many children and helps build their confidence in the kitchen. Kneading and shaping the yeast dough playfully promotes fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Parents and children get to spend wonderful, quality time together while the delicious scent of fresh baking fills the home. This recipe is a fantastic way to introduce working with yeast dough.
Ingredients
- 250 g wheat flour (bread flour or all-purpose, organic if possible)
- 150 ml lukewarm water
- 0.5 cube fresh yeast (approx. 21 g) or 1 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 tsp soft butter (or plant-based alternative)
- 0.5 tsp fine salt for the dough
- For the baking soda bath: 500 ml water, 2 tbsp baking soda
- For sprinkling: 1 tsp coarse sea salt
Preparation
- Pour the lukewarm water into a mixing bowl and stir until the yeast is completely dissolved.
- Add the flour, soft butter, and fine salt to the bowl.
- Knead everything thoroughly until a smooth, pliable dough forms that no longer sticks to your hands.
- Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes.
- Divide the risen dough into six equal pieces and roll them into long ropes on your work surface.
- Shape the ropes into classic pretzels and let them rest on the counter for another 15 minutes.
- For the bath, bring the water to a boil in a wide pot, carefully stir in the baking soda, and reduce the heat.
- Using a slotted spoon, dip each pretzel into the simmering water for about 30 seconds and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Sprinkle with a little coarse sea salt and bake in a preheated oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the pretzels cool down well on a wire rack and check the temperature before your child takes a bite.
Variations and Tips
- Seed Variation: Instead of coarse salt, you can sprinkle the damp pretzels with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or sunflower seeds.
- Storage: The pretzels taste best fresh but will easily keep in an airtight bread box for up to two days.
- Freezing: You can freeze the fully baked pretzels and simply warm them up briefly in the oven when needed.
- Adjusting Texture: For children who prefer softer baked goods, you can shorten the baking time by two to three minutes.
- Family Tip: For adults, the dough is also delicious when baked with a little grated cheese or savory spices on top.
Allergy and Safety Information
This recipe contains wheat (gluten) and dairy, which are common allergens. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to monitor for any reactions. The coarse sea salt can be completely omitted for younger children, as the dough itself is already lightly salted. If you have any uncertainties about diet or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Thanks to the flour, this baked treat provides important carbohydrates for plenty of daily energy during play and discovery. Yeast contains valuable B vitamins that gently support the metabolism. For children aged three and up, small amounts of salt are fine as long as the rest of their diet remains balanced and varied.
