Baking Fun in the Kitchen

Baking together brings great joy to many children and helps develop fine motor skills. These savory ham and cheese swirls, made from a simple yeast dough, are wonderful for little hands to knead and roll up. It is a fantastic sensory experience that also provides energy for an active afternoon.

Ingredients for the Swirls

The following measurements yield about 6 to 8 swirls, which is suitable for 2 to 3 portions.

  • 250 g spelt flour (Type 630 or all-purpose flour, organic if possible)
  • 1/2 packet of active dry yeast (about 3 to 4 g)
  • 125 ml lukewarm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 50 g mild cooked ham (finely diced)
  • 50 g mild grated cheese (such as young Gouda or mild cheddar)
  • 1 tbsp cream cheese for spreading

Simple Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Mix the flour, yeast, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl.
  2. Add the lukewarm water and olive oil, then knead everything into a smooth dough. The dough is ready when it pulls away from the sides of the bowl and is no longer sticky.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes, until it has noticeably doubled in volume.
  4. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit).
  5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle.
  6. Spread a thin layer of cream cheese over the dough and sprinkle evenly with the diced ham and grated cheese.
  7. Roll the dough up tightly from the long side and cut it into slices about two centimeters thick using a knife.
  8. Place the swirls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let the swirls cool down well before eating. Please check the temperature inside before your child takes a bite.

Variations and Practical Tips

Hidden Veggies: Mix very finely grated carrots or zucchini into the cream cheese to effortlessly sneak in some vegetables.

Storage: The swirls will keep in the fridge in an airtight container for about two days. They also freeze exceptionally well and can be quickly reheated in a toaster or oven when needed.

Texture for Younger Kids: For a softer chewing experience, brush the swirls with a little milk before baking to keep the crust nice and tender.

For the Whole Family: Adults often prefer a more flavorful version. You can sprinkle a portion of the swirls with some black pepper or herbs before baking.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten (flour) and dairy (cheese, cream cheese), which are among the major food allergens. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to carefully observe any potential reactions. Avoid honey for children under one year of age, and only offer nuts in a finely ground form due to the choking hazard. If you have any concerns about nutrition or introducing new ingredients, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutrients for Little Explorers

Flour provides valuable carbohydrates and fiber, ensuring long-lasting energy. The cheese contributes important calcium, which supports bone development. Together with the protein from the ham, this creates a balanced snack for active little ones.
