Baking Sweet Elephant Ears: An Easy Recipe for Kids
Introduction
This lightning-fast recipe using ready-made puff pastry brings a lot of joy to the family kitchen. Children from about three years of age can easily roll up the soft dough themselves and cut it into slices with a child-safe knife. These shared activities playfully support fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. The sweet, warm scent from the oven also builds excitement for a cozy afternoon treat together.
Ingredients
- 1 roll of fresh puff pastry (approx. 275 g, refrigerated)
- 2 tablespoons raw cane sugar or fine coconut sugar
- 1 teaspoon Ceylon cinnamon (milder than Cassia cinnamon)
- 1 tablespoon soft butter (for brushing)
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius using conventional heating. Line a large baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper.
- Roll out the puff pastry completely on a clean work surface. Brush the surface evenly with the soft butter.
- Mix the sugar and cinnamon well in a small bowl. Sprinkle the sweet mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
- Roll the short sides of the dough evenly from both sides towards the center. Continue rolling until they meet in the middle.
- Cut the resulting dough roll into slices about one centimeter thick using a sharp knife.
- Place the slices on the prepared baking sheet with enough space between them. Press each piece down slightly with your fingers.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 12 to 15 minutes until a golden brown and crispy texture is achieved.
- Let the finished elephant ears cool completely before eating. Check the temperature carefully, as the caramelized sugar is very hot at first.
Variations & Tips
- Reduce sugar: For a less sweet version, half a tablespoon of sugar mixed with a little more cinnamon is often enough.
- Fruity filling: Brush the dough very thinly with unsweetened applesauce or pear puree before rolling it up.
- Storage: Kept in a well-sealed, airtight container at room temperature, the elephant ears stay wonderfully crispy for about two to three days.
- For the whole family: Adults and older siblings can dip half of the finished, cooled elephant ears into melted dark chocolate.
Allergy & Safety Information
- This recipe contains gluten from the wheat in the puff pastry and lactose in the butter.
- Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to carefully observe any potential reactions.
- Strictly avoid honey for children under 12 months to prevent the risk of dangerous infant botulism. Nuts may only be used finely ground due to the choking hazard.
- If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods or possible intolerances, it is best to consult your pediatrician.
