A Warm Snack for Active Afternoons

These baked cheesy pretzel bites make a wonderful, warm snack for children from three years of age. The cheese provides valuable calcium for bone development, while the bites offer a satisfying treat on busy afternoons. The small pieces are easy to grasp and encourage independent eating. Especially after preschool or a trip to the playground, a warm little meal is often exactly what is needed.

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 day-old soft pretzels or pretzel sticks (approx. 200 g)
  • 80 g mild Gouda cheese (grated)
  • 2 tablespoons soft butter
  • 1 pinch sweet paprika (optional)
  • 1 small handful fresh parsley (finely chopped)

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (conventional heat). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Cut the soft pretzels into small, bite-sized pieces. Place the pieces into a mixing bowl.
  3. Combine the soft butter with the finely chopped parsley and the paprika. Add this herb butter to the pretzel pieces and mix everything thoroughly.
  4. Spread the coated bites evenly on the baking tray. Sprinkle the grated Gouda over the top.
  5. Bake the bites in the oven for about 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and slightly golden brown.
  6. Let the snack cool down well before serving. Always check the temperature before your child takes a bite.

Variations and Tips

  • Veggie Boost: Mix small diced tomatoes or finely chopped bell peppers into the pretzel bites before adding the cheese.
  • Storage: These bites taste best fresh out of the oven. You can store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days and reheat them briefly.
  • For the Whole Family: Adults can spice up their portion with a little chili, garlic, or spring onions.
  • Texture Tweak: For younger siblings around one year old, you can briefly soak the pretzel pieces in a little milk beforehand to make them softer.

Allergy and Safety Notes

This recipe contains gluten (pretzels) and dairy (butter, cheese). Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any reactions. Ensure the pieces are cut to an age-appropriate size and that your child is sitting upright while eating. If you have any uncertainties about introducing new foods or allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutrition Note

Mild Gouda provides a good amount of calcium and high-quality protein. These nutrients support growth and bone development during this active age. The pretzels also offer quick energy for a busy afternoon.
