Introduction
Baking together is a wonderful way to playfully support your child's fine motor skills. These moist chocolate banana muffins are excellent for little helpers, as mashing the bananas and adding the colorful decorations bring a lot of joy. At the same time, this recipe provides valuable energy for active afternoons or birthday parties.
Ingredients
For about 6 to 8 muffins (equal to 2 or 3 generous child portions) you will need:
- 2 very ripe bananas (organic preferred)
- 100 g spelt flour or all-purpose flour
- 30 g unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 50 g soft butter or neutral vegetable oil
- 1 egg (medium)
- 2 tbsp milk (dairy or plant-based)
- 1 tbsp maple syrup (optional, as bananas are often sweet enough)
- Colorful sprinkles for decoration
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit) and place paper liners in a muffin tin.
- Let your child mash the peeled bananas in a bowl with a fork until a smooth puree forms.
- Add the soft butter, egg, and milk, and stir everything well.
- In a second bowl, mix the flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder.
- Gently fold the dry ingredients into the banana mixture until a smooth, thick batter is created.
- Use a spoon to fill the muffin liners with the batter and scatter the colorful sprinkles on top.
- Bake the muffins in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes.
- Let the muffins cool completely after baking, and always check the temperature inside before your child takes a bite.
Variations & Tips
- Fruity Alternative: Swap one banana for half a cup of finely grated apple or unsweetened applesauce.
- Storage: The muffins will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for about three days. They also freeze beautifully and can be thawed individually as needed.
- For the Whole Family: Adults can enhance their own portion by stirring in chopped walnuts or dark chocolate chips before baking.
- Texture Adjustment: For younger siblings, you can omit the sprinkles to keep the texture softer and easier to chew.
Allergy & Safety Information
This recipe contains wheat (gluten), egg, and dairy, which are common allergens. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions. Colorful sprinkles can be tricky for very young toddlers to chew, which is why they are best suited for children aged three and older. Whole nuts pose a choking hazard and must only be used finely ground for young children. If you have any concerns about nutrition or introducing new foods, please consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Bananas provide valuable potassium and natural carbohydrates, offering quick energy for playing and running around. The flour contains important fiber that supports healthy digestion. Thanks to the cocoa, your child also gets a small amount of iron, which is particularly beneficial during active growth spurts.
