Classic Campfire Bread on a Stick for Autumn

Seasonal2+y 75 min 4 VeganMedium
Contains: Gluten

Introduction

A warm yeast dough, wrapped around a stick and baked over the glowing embers, is a wonderful experience for families. Many children from three years of age love shaping the soft dough themselves and watching it bake. Kneading and rolling together also playfully supports the fine motor skills of little hands.

Ingredients

  • 250 g wheat flour (all-purpose) or spelt flour
  • 125 ml lukewarm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 0.5 packet active dry yeast (approx. 4 g)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp maple syrup or agave nectar (to feed the yeast)

Preparation

  1. Mix the flour, dry yeast, a pinch of salt, and the maple syrup in a large bowl.
  2. Add the lukewarm water and olive oil, kneading vigorously until a smooth, pliable dough forms.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes, until it has visibly expanded in volume.
  4. Divide the dough into four to six equal pieces and roll them into long snakes.
  5. Wrap the dough snakes in a spiral around clean, bark-free, and non-toxic sticks (for example hazel or beech).
  6. Hold the bread at a safe distance over the hot embers and slowly bake it until golden brown all around.
  7. Let the bread cool down completely and check the inside temperature before eating to prevent burns.

Variations & Tips

  • Herb variation: Mix finely chopped herbs like rosemary or thyme directly into the dough for a savory flavor.
  • For the whole family: Adults can brush their bread with a little garlic oil or knead grated cheese into the dough before baking.
  • Storage: Fully kneaded dough can be kept covered in the fridge for up to two days. Simply bring it back to room temperature before use.
  • Adapting the texture: For younger siblings, the baked bread can be torn into small, soft, bite-sized pieces.

Allergy & Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten (wheat or spelt). Always introduce new foods individually and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.

Only use non-toxic woods for the campfire, such as hazel, willow, or beech. Never leave children unattended near the fire.

If you have any uncertainties regarding nutrition, allergies, or general development, please always consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

This rustic bread provides valuable carbohydrates that give little explorers quick energy for playing outdoors. If you choose spelt flour, you naturally increase the amount of fiber and minerals. These nutrients support good digestion and provide strength for exciting autumn days.
