This moist marble cake is a wonderful project for spending time together in the kitchen. Stirring the batter and especially swirling the fork to create the pattern playfully supports fine motor skills. It is a relaxed experience that brings joy to everyone and smells absolutely delicious.
Ingredients (for a small loaf, approx 4 to 6 slices)
- 100 g soft butter (organic preferred)
- 60 g raw cane sugar or coconut sugar
- 2 eggs (medium size)
- 100 g wheat or spelt flour (type 1050 or all purpose)
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 2 tbsp milk
- For the dark batter: 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 tbsp milk
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius and grease a small loaf pan well.
- Beat the soft butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Stir in the eggs one by one until well combined.
- Mix the flour and baking powder, add to the batter, and stir in briefly along with the two tablespoons of milk.
- Pour about two thirds of the light batter into the baking pan and smooth it out.
- Mix the cocoa and the extra spoonful of milk into the remaining third of the batter until it is evenly dark.
- Spread the dark batter over the light one. Your child can now gently drag a fork through the pan in a spiral motion to create the marble pattern.
- Bake the cake for about 30 to 35 minutes until a wooden skewer inserted comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool completely and always check the temperature before serving.
Variations and Tips
- Hidden Fruit: Fold a few small, soft apple pieces into the light batter to make the cake even moister.
- Storage: Kept in an airtight container, the cake stays fresh in the fridge for about three days. It also freezes beautifully in slices for easy thawing.
- Sugar Alternative: For a milder taste, you can reduce the sugar further or use a little unsweetened applesauce.
- Family Tip: Serve with fresh seasonal fruit or a dollop of unsweetened whipped cream for the adults.
Allergy and Safety Information
- This recipe contains wheat (gluten), eggs, and milk (EU14 allergens).
- Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to monitor for any reactions.
