Classic Mini Toast Hawaii from the Oven: A Tasty Snack for Kids

Snacks2+y 21 min 4Easy
Contains: Gluten, Dairy

This popular snack in a practical bite-sized format is a hit with many children. The crispy toast quarters, topped with juicy ham, sweet pineapple, and covered in melted cheese, are perfect for independent eating. At the same time, the combination of carbohydrates and protein provides valuable energy for active afternoons.

Ingredients (for 2 to 3 portions)

  • 4 slices of whole wheat bread (or mild mixed wheat bread)
  • 2 slices of cooked ham (organic preferred)
  • 2 rings of fresh pineapple (or unsweetened canned pineapple, drained)
  • 4 slices of mild cheese (such as Gouda or Edam)
  • 1 teaspoon of soft butter
  • A tiny pinch of mild paprika (optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Lightly spread butter on the bread slices and cut each into four small squares. Place the quarters on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Cut the cooked ham and pineapple rings into small pieces that fit well on the toast quarters. Layer the ham first, followed by the pineapple.
  4. Cut the cheese into small squares and place them on top of the mini toasts as the final layer. If desired, sprinkle a tiny pinch of mild paprika over the cheese.
  5. Bake the mini toasts in the oven for about 10 to 12 minutes, until the cheese is melted and slightly golden brown.
  6. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the snacks cool down well. Always test the temperature before serving, as the pineapple often gets very hot.

Variations and Tips

  • Vegetarian option: Simply leave out the ham or replace it with a mild vegetable slice like zucchini.
  • Storage: The finished mini toasts taste best fresh. You can store leftovers in the refrigerator for one to two days and briefly reheat them in the oven. Freezing is not recommended for this recipe, as the toast can become soggy.
  • For the whole family: Adults often enhance their portion with a little pepper, chili flakes, or a dollop of cranberry sauce after baking.
  • Adjusting texture: For children who are still practicing their chewing skills, you can cut off the bread crusts before adding the toppings.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten (bread), dairy products (cheese, butter), and depending on the bread type, possibly traces of other EU14 allergens. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any potential intolerances.

If you have any uncertainties regarding diet or introducing new foods, please speak with your pediatrician. If you modify the recipe, please note: Nuts and seeds pose a choking hazard and must only be used finely ground. Honey must also be completely avoided in the first year of life due to the risk of botulism.

Nutritional Information

This dish provides important dietary fiber for good digestion through the whole wheat bread. The cheese adds calcium and high-quality protein, which supports bone growth during this active phase. The pineapple also contributes a portion of vitamin C, which helps with the absorption of iron from the grains.
