Classic Plum Cake with Cinnamon Streusel for Kids

Seasonal2+y 110 min 4 VeggieHard
Contains: Gluten, Dairy

Introduction

Autumn is the perfect season for fresh plums. This classic plum cake with soft yeast dough and sweet cinnamon streusel is a wonderful baking project for cozy afternoons. Children aged three and up can easily help knead the dough and arrange the fruit, which playfully supports their fine motor skills.

Ingredients

  • 250 g spelt flour
  • 21 g fresh yeast (half a cube)
  • 100 ml lukewarm milk
  • 30 g soft butter
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 500 g fresh plums
  • For the streusel: 50 g spelt flour, 30 g cold butter, 1 tbsp maple syrup, 1/2 tsp Ceylon cinnamon

Preparation

  1. Mix the lukewarm milk with the yeast and maple syrup in a bowl. Add the flour and soft butter, kneading everything into a smooth dough.
  2. Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes. The volume will visibly double during this time.
  3. Meanwhile, wash the plums, cut them in half, and remove the pits. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
  4. For the streusel, quickly rub the flour, cold butter, maple syrup, and cinnamon between your fingers to form small crumbs.
  5. Roll out the risen dough on a small greased baking sheet. Arrange the plum halves closely together on top of the dough.
  6. Scatter the cinnamon streusel evenly over the fruit. Bake the cake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool completely. Always check the temperature before serving, as the baked fruit retains heat for a long time.

Variations and Tips

  • Choose different fruits: Outside the plum season, this cake tastes fantastic with apples, pears, or apricots.
  • Storage: The cake stays fresh for two to three days when covered in the refrigerator. It also freezes beautifully in small portions and can be thawed at room temperature.
  • For the whole family: Adults can enjoy their slice with a dollop of unsweetened whipped cream.
  • Texture adjustment: For children who prefer softer cakes, you can simply skip the streusel.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten from the spelt flour and dairy. It is best to introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts. Ensure young children sit upright and eat in a calm environment to prevent choking. If you have any concerns about your child's diet or potential allergies, consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Plums provide valuable dietary fiber, which supports healthy digestion. The spelt in the dough and streusel also offers complex carbohydrates for long-lasting energy. This is a wonderful combination that gives strength on active autumn days while keeping little tummies satisfied.
