Colorful Beetroot Hummus with Spelt Crackers

The bright pink color of this dip often sparks immediate curiosity in many children. Dipping crispy crackers into the colorful hummus is a fun and interactive experience.

This recipe provides wonderful energy for the afternoon and supports digestion. It makes a great everyday snack and is a perfect addition to any lunchbox.

Ingredients

  • 150 g cooked beetroot (organic quality recommended)
  • 250 g chickpeas (canned or jarred, drained)
  • 1 tbsp tahini (sesame paste)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 pinch of mild paprika
  • 100 g spelt crackers (unsalted, store-bought or homemade)

Yields: two to three portions

Preparation

  1. Rinse the chickpeas thoroughly in a sieve under running water until they no longer foam.
  2. Cut the cooked beetroot into large chunks. If you are cooking the beetroot fresh, let it cool down completely before blending.
  3. Place the chickpeas, beetroot, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, and paprika into a blender or a tall container.
  4. Puree everything until a smooth, creamy consistency is reached. If the hummus is too thick, add a little water, one tablespoon at a time.
  5. Spoon the finished hummus into a bowl and serve alongside the spelt crackers. Always do a quick temperature check before serving if any ingredients were previously heated.

Variations & Tips

  • Variation: Cooked carrots or sweet potatoes work wonderfully as a substitute for beetroot to create a differently colored dip.
  • Storage: The hummus keeps well for two to three days in the refrigerator when stored in an airtight container. It can also be frozen in small portions using an ice cube tray.
  • Texture adjustment: For younger siblings, the hummus can be blended with a bit more water and spread on soft strips of bread.
  • Family tip: Parents can easily season their own portion with a pinch of salt, cumin, or a little garlic for a more robust flavor.

Allergy and Safety Information

  • This recipe contains sesame in the tahini and gluten in the spelt crackers. Both are common allergens.
  • Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts. This allows you to monitor for any reactions easily.
  • Whole nuts and seeds pose a choking hazard, so they are only used here as a smooth paste. Honey carries a risk of botulism for babies under twelve months and is avoided in early foods.
  • If you have any concerns about introducing new foods, speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Chickpeas provide plant-based protein and valuable fiber, supporting healthy digestion. Beetroot offers iron and vitamin C. These nutrients are especially helpful during the preschool years to fuel active play and naturally support the immune system.
