Introduction

This colorful fusilli casserole is a true family favorite, offering a soft texture that is perfect for children aged three and up. The sweet peas and mild cooked ham provide valuable energy for active days full of discovery. With its creamy sauce and gentle cheese crust, this dish makes for a cozy and inviting meal at the family table.

Ingredients

  • 150 g fusilli pasta (whole wheat is a great option)
  • 100 g frozen peas
  • 75 g mild cooked ham (thick slice or block)
  • 100 ml heavy cream or cooking cream
  • 100 ml milk
  • 50 g grated mild cheese (like Gouda or mild cheddar)
  • 1 teaspoon canola oil or butter for the baking dish
  • A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • A little chopped fresh parsley
  • A small pinch of salt and pepper (keep it mild for young children)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (standard bake) and lightly grease a small baking dish.
  2. Cook the fusilli pasta in lightly salted water according to the package instructions until tender.
  3. About three minutes before the pasta is done, add the frozen peas to the pot and cook them together.
  4. Cut the cooked ham into small, bite-sized cubes.
  5. Drain the pasta and peas well, then transfer them along with the ham cubes into the prepared baking dish.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the cream, milk, nutmeg, parsley, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  7. Pour the sauce evenly over the pasta mixture and sprinkle the grated cheese on top.
  8. Bake the casserole in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and lightly golden.
  9. Let the dish cool down well before serving, and always check the temperature before your child takes the first bite.

Variations and Tips

  • Switch up the veggies: Instead of peas, small broccoli florets or grated carrots work beautifully in this dish.
  • Storage: Leftovers keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days and can be gently reheated.
  • Freezing: You can freeze this casserole in portions, making it a quick lunch option for busy days.
  • Family tip: Parents can easily spice up their own portions at the table with chili flakes, extra black pepper, or roasted onions.

Allergy and Safety Information

  • This recipe contains gluten (pasta) and dairy (cream, milk, cheese).
  • Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily spot any potential sensitivities.
  • Make sure the ham does not have any hard edges, ensuring your child can chew everything comfortably.
  • If you have any concerns about your child's diet or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutrition Information

The pasta in this dish provides important carbohydrates for sustained energy during active play. Peas add plant-based protein and fiber, while the dairy products contribute calcium for bone growth. The cooked ham also serves as a source of iron and B vitamins.
