Colorful Pasta with Creamy Pea and Basil Pesto

This creamy pesto made from sweet peas and fresh basil is a wonderful family meal for children from three years of age. It provides valuable plant-based proteins and vitamins wrapped in a familiar pasta dish. The bright green color and mild flavor invite little foodies to enjoy green vegetables with delight [1].

Ingredients

  • 250 g colorful pasta (such as rotini or penne, organic if possible)
  • 150 g frozen peas
  • 50 g cream cheese (full fat)
  • 1 handful fresh basil leaves
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 pinch mild paprika
  • 1 pinch salt (perfectly fine in small amounts for toddlers and older children)
  • 2 tbsp pasta water (for blending)

Preparation

  1. Cook the pasta according to the package instructions in lightly salted water. Shortly before the cooking time is up, carefully scoop out about two tablespoons of the pasta water into a small cup.
  2. Steam the frozen peas in a small pot with a little water for about five minutes until soft. Drain the water once they are tender.
  3. Place the warm peas, cream cheese, olive oil, and basil leaves into a tall blending container. Blend everything with an immersion blender until a smooth, creamy mixture forms.
  4. If needed, add the reserved pasta water a little at a time until the pesto reaches your desired creaminess. Season gently with a pinch of salt and mild paprika.
  5. Fold the finished pesto into the warm pasta and mix well. Let the dish cool briefly and always test the temperature before serving so your child does not burn their mouth.

Variations & Tips

  • Swap the vegetables: You can easily replace some of the peas with cooked broccoli or zucchini for a different flavor profile.
  • Storage: The pesto will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days. It also freezes beautifully in ice cube trays for easy portioning.
  • For the whole family: Adults and older children can enhance their plates at the table with toasted pine nuts, a hint of garlic, or freshly grated parmesan cheese.
  • Adjusting texture: If your child prefers a chunkier sauce, you can pulse the peas very briefly or mash them gently with a fork instead of blending.

Allergy & Safety Information

This recipe contains dairy (cream cheese) and gluten (pasta), which are among the top common allergens. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any potential reactions.

If you add nuts or seeds for adults, remember they pose a choking hazard for young children and must only be offered finely ground. If you have any uncertainties regarding your child's diet or potential allergies, please speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

The peas in this dish provide plenty of plant-based protein and important fiber, which support healthy digestion [1]. Fresh basil and olive oil contribute valuable antioxidants and healthy fats. This combination of nutrients supports growth and provides long-lasting energy for active afternoons.
