Bunte Gemüsegarten-Focaccia für kleine Bäcker

Colorful Vegetable Garden Focaccia for Little Bakers

Baking with kids12+m 85 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Honey, Dairy

Introduction

This recipe invites your child to actively help in the kitchen. Baking together not only creates beautiful memories but also sparks an interest in healthy ingredients. Kneading the soft dough playfully fosters fine motor skills and is a lot of fun. The colorful vegetable topping provides valuable nutrients and makes trying new flavors an exciting experience. It is a wonderful way to enjoy a shared meal at the family table.

Ingredients

  • 250 g wheat flour (all-purpose) or spelt flour, organic preferred
  • 150 ml lukewarm water
  • 1/2 cube fresh yeast (approx. 21 g) or 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp honey (allowed from 12 months)
  • 2 tbsp mild olive oil
  • 1 small pinch of salt (used very sparingly for toddlers)
  • For the vegetable garden:
    • 50 g cherry tomatoes (must be halved or quartered)
    • 1/2 small yellow or red bell pepper
    • A few leaves of fresh parsley or basil
    • Optional: a little grated mild cheese for sprinkling

Preparation

  1. Dissolve the yeast and honey in the lukewarm water. Let the mixture rest for about 5 minutes until it becomes slightly frothy.
  2. Place the flour, olive oil, and a tiny pinch of salt in a bowl. Add the yeast water and knead everything into a smooth dough until it pulls away easily from the sides of the bowl.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes. It will visibly double in size during this time.
  4. Press the soft dough flat onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. This is a wonderful task where little hands can help out beautifully.
  5. Wash the vegetables, cut the bell pepper into fine strips or small flower shapes, and halve the cherry tomatoes lengthwise. Gently press the vegetable pieces into the dough together, creating a colorful flower meadow.
  6. Bake the focaccia in a preheated oven at 200 degrees Celsius (conventional) or 180 degrees Celsius (convection) for about 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown. Let it cool completely and check the temperature before serving.

Variations & Tips

  • Different Vegetables: Feel free to swap the bell peppers and tomatoes for mild zucchini slices or soft sweet corn kernels.
  • Storage: The focaccia can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. It also freezes exceptionally well (for up to three months), ideally portioned into handy slices beforehand.
  • For the Whole Family: Adults can refine their half of the dough with a little coarse sea salt, fresh rosemary, and extra olive oil before baking. A mild herb quark or simple hummus makes an excellent dip to go with it.
  • Adjusting Texture: For children who are still practicing chewing firmer pieces, you can finely dice the vegetables instead of using larger chunks.

Allergy & Safety Information

  • Allergens: This recipe contains wheat (gluten). If cheese is used, the recipe also contains milk (lactose).
  • Tomato Safety: Always halve or quarter cherry tomatoes lengthwise, as whole small tomatoes pose a choking hazard for toddlers.
  • Honey Note: This recipe contains honey, which is safe for children from 12 months of age. For younger babies, omit the honey entirely due to the risk of infant botulism.
  • New Foods: Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.
  • Medical Advice: If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods or your child's diet, it is best to consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

This colorful baked treat provides valuable complex carbohydrates from the flour, offering long-lasting energy for active explorers. The fiber in the flour and vegetables also supports healthy digestion, which is very helpful during the transition to family meals. Fresh vegetables, like bell peppers and tomatoes, contribute important vitamin C, which supports iron absorption from other foods. The mild olive oil also contains valuable unsaturated fatty acids, which are highly beneficial for early brain development.
