Creamy Avocado and Banana Puree for Starting Solids
This creamy avocado and banana puree is a wonderful choice for early experiences with solid food. The soft texture makes it easy for many babies to take from a spoon. At the same time, the combination provides valuable plant fats and energy for the day. Preparation is wonderfully quick since no cooking is required at all.
Ingredients
- 1/2 ripe avocado
- 1/2 ripe banana
- 1 to 2 tbsp breast milk, formula, or water
Preparation
- Scoop out the flesh of half an avocado and remove the pit.
- Peel half a banana and break it into chunks.
- Mash both ingredients in a small bowl with a fork very finely, or puree them until a completely smooth, velvety texture is formed.
- If needed, stir in a little liquid (breast milk, formula, or water) to reach the desired creaminess.
- Briefly check the temperature before feeding, just in case warm liquid was used.
Variations and Tips
For a little variety, you can replace the banana with finely pureed, softly steamed pear. Since avocado turns brown quickly when exposed to air, it is best to prepare this puree fresh right before eating. In the refrigerator, the puree will keep in an airtight container for up to one day, but it is not ideal for freezing because the texture can change. A tip for parents: The other half of the avocado and banana tastes great on whole wheat toast or as a quick smoothie base.
Allergies and Safety
This recipe is naturally free of the most common allergens, provided you use water or breast milk. When introducing new foods, it is helpful to offer them one at a time and wait a few days. This way, you can easily observe how your child tolerates the ingredients. Remember that breast milk or formula remains the primary source of nutrition during the first year. If you have any concerns about starting solids, always consult your pediatrician.
Nutrients for Your Child
Avocados are rich in unsaturated fats, which are a great source of energy. Bananas also provide natural potassium and dietary fiber, which are gentle on digestion. This combination of nutrients is a wonderful addition to support their growing daily activity.
