Creamy Semolina Porridge with Warm Pear Chunks

This creamy semolina porridge with soft pear chunks is a wonderful comfort food for toddlers from twelve months onwards. It provides long-lasting energy for active little explorers and is very popular with many families due to the mild sweetness of the fruit. This dish is perfect for sharing at the family table.

Ingredients

  • 400 ml whole milk or an unsweetened plant-based alternative
  • 40 g soft wheat semolina
  • 1 ripe pear
  • 1 tsp butter or mild vegetable oil
  • A small pinch of Ceylon cinnamon (optional)

We recommend using organic ingredients where possible. This recipe makes about two to three toddler portions.

Preparation

  1. Wash, peel, and core the pear, then cut it into small, bite-sized cubes.
  2. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat and sauté the pear cubes for about three to five minutes until soft.
  3. Pour the milk into the saucepan with the pears and slowly bring everything to a boil.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat, slowly sprinkle in the semolina while stirring constantly with a whisk, and add the cinnamon.
  5. Let the porridge thicken on the warm stove for another one to two minutes, stirring well.
  6. Pour the semolina porridge into bowls, let it cool down well, and always check the temperature before serving.

Variations & Tips

  • Fruit variations: Instead of pear, grated apple, soft peach slices, or a mashed banana work beautifully for this recipe.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. When reheating, simply stir in a little milk to make the porridge creamy again. We do not recommend freezing, as the texture can become watery.
  • Adjusting texture: For younger children or if your child is still getting used to chunks, you can simply puree the pear after cooking.
  • For the whole family: Adults can add chopped nuts, a spoonful of honey, or toasted coconut flakes as a topping.

Allergy & Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten (wheat semolina) and lactose (cow's milk). It is a good idea to introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to observe any potential reactions.

Although honey is safe after the first birthday, many families skip it entirely in this recipe because the pear provides plenty of natural sweetness. If you use nuts as a topping for adults, only offer them finely ground to your child, as whole or roughly chopped nuts pose a choking hazard.

If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods or toddler nutrition, please speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Wheat semolina provides valuable carbohydrates that give your child energy for the day. The pear is rich in fiber and supports healthy digestion. At the same time, the milk contributes important calcium, which is very valuable for bone growth at this age.
