Crispy Baked Apple Chips: A Healthy Snack for Kids

Snacks2+y 125 min 4 VeganMedium

Crispy Baked Apple Chips

Paper-thin apple slices, slowly baked in the oven until crispy, offer a wonderful snacking experience for children aged three and up. This completely natural treat requires zero added sugar and serves as a fantastic fruity alternative to conventional sweets. The crunchy texture is highly enjoyable for many children and encourages a love for fresh fruit.

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 medium apples (organic preferred)
  • Optional: 1 tsp Ceylon cinnamon (very mild and suitable for young children)

(Makes about 2 to 3 servings)

Preparation

  1. Wash the apples thoroughly and remove the core using an apple corer.
  2. Slice the unpeeled apples paper-thin using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife.
  3. Place the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Preheat the oven to 90 to 100 degrees Celsius (convection setting).
  5. Let the apples dry in the oven for about 1.5 to 2 hours. Prop the oven door open slightly with a wooden spoon to allow moisture to escape.
  6. Remove the chips from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack. They will only become truly crispy once cooled.
  7. Always check the temperature before serving to ensure the chips are not too hot.

Variations & Tips

  • Pear chips: This recipe also works beautifully with firm pears.
  • Storage: Stored in an airtight glass container, completely cooled apple chips will keep for about a week. Freezing is not recommended, as they will lose their crunch.
  • For the whole family: Adults can spice up their portion with a pinch of cardamom or a tiny bit of chili powder before baking.

Allergy & Safety Information

This recipe is free from the top 14 major allergens. However, always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any reactions. Apples can sometimes trigger oral allergy syndrome in individuals with birch pollen allergies. If you have any concerns about introducing new foods or your child's diet, always consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Apples provide valuable dietary fiber, such as pectin, which can support healthy digestion. They also contain Vitamin C and natural fruit sugars for quick energy. These nutrients are wonderful for fueling active toddlers throughout their busy days.
