Baking Fun for Little Explorers

These crispy carrot and spelt crackers make a wonderful snack for children from twelve months onwards. Cutting out the shapes together playfully supports your child's fine motor skills. At the same time, the hidden vegetables provide valuable nutrients for their growing body. It is a great experience for the whole family that also tastes absolutely delicious.

Ingredients

  • 150 g spelt flour (whole wheat or type 1050, organic preferred)
  • 100 g finely grated carrots (about 1 large carrot)
  • 40 ml mild olive oil
  • 30 ml water
  • 1 pinch of salt (use very sparingly)
  • 1 tsp mild herbs (for example dried oregano or thyme)

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (standard bake) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Wash and peel the carrot, then grate it very finely using a box grater.
  3. In a bowl, mix the spelt flour, grated carrots, olive oil, water, herbs, and the small pinch of salt.
  4. Knead everything well with your hands until a smooth and pliable dough forms.
  5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of about three to four millimeters.
  6. Let your child cut out small crackers using their favorite cookie cutters and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake the crackers in the oven for about 12 to 15 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy.
  8. Allow the crackers to cool completely and check the temperature before offering them to your child.

Variations and Tips

  • Vary the vegetables: Simply swap the carrots for finely grated zucchini or sweet potatoes. Squeeze out excess water from watery vegetables like zucchini beforehand.
  • Storage: Stored in an airtight container at room temperature, the crackers stay crispy for about four to five days. They also freeze wonderfully and can be briefly reheated in the oven when needed.
  • For the whole family: Adults can sprinkle their crackers with a little coarse sea salt, sesame seeds, or chili flakes before baking.
  • Adjusting the texture: For children who prefer a softer bite, you can simply reduce the baking time by two to three minutes.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten from the spelt flour. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily spot any potential sensitivities. Ensure that your child chews small pieces well. It is always best to offer snacks while your child is seated.

If you modify the recipe to include nuts, only use them very finely ground to prevent any choking hazard. If you plan to use honey for sweetness, remember that it is only safe for children over twelve months. If you have any concerns about your child's diet, always consult your pediatrician.

Everyday Nutrients

The carrots in this recipe provide plenty of beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A to support healthy vision. Spelt flour offers important dietary fiber that promotes healthy digestion. The olive oil helps the body optimally absorb the fat-soluble vitamins from the vegetables.
