Crispy Flammkuchen with Ham and Leek for the Whole Family
Introduction
A crispy flatbread spread with crème fraîche and topped with finely diced ham and mild leek. This dish is wonderful for children from three years of age, as they can actively help with the toppings and practice their fine motor skills. The mild leek provides valuable vitamins, while the crispy crust encourages chewing and offers a great taste experience for the whole family.
Ingredients
- 250 g flour (wheat or spelt, organic if possible)
- 125 ml water (lukewarm)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 pinch of salt (for the dough)
- 150 g crème fraîche or sour cream
- 1 small leek
- 75 g lean diced ham
- 1 pinch of nutmeg (grated)
- 1 pinch of pepper (mild)
Preparation
- Mix the flour, water, olive oil, and a small pinch of salt in a bowl. Knead everything into a smooth dough and let it rest for about 15 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 220 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat). Wash the leek thoroughly and cut it into very fine rings.
- Roll out the dough very thinly on a floured work surface and place it on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
- Spread the crème fraîche evenly over the dough and season with a little nutmeg and pepper.
- Sprinkle the flatbread with the fine leek rings and the diced ham.
- Bake the Flammkuchen in the hot oven for about 12 to 15 minutes, until the edges are crispy and lightly browned.
- Let the Flammkuchen cool down briefly before serving. Always check the temperature before your child takes the first bite.
Variations & Tips
- Vegetarian Option: Simply swap the diced ham for diced mushrooms or small apple pieces.
- Storage: Leftovers can easily be kept in the fridge for one to two days and crisped up again in the oven. Freezing the baked Flammkuchen is possible, though the crust loses a bit of its crunch.
- Adjusting Texture: For children who are still practicing their chewing skills, you can briefly sauté the leek in a pan beforehand to make it softer.
- Family Tip: Adults can refine their half of the flatbread with fresh herbs or a bit of stronger pepper after baking.
Allergy & Safety Information
This recipe contains gluten (flour) and dairy (crème fraîche). Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions. Make sure the leek is finely sliced so it is easy to chew. If you have any uncertainties about your child's diet or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Thanks to the leek, this dish provides important vitamin C and folic acid, supporting the immune system in daily life. The crème fraîche and oil offer valuable fats that provide quick energy for active afternoons. The lean ham also contributes a good portion of protein, which is beneficial for growth at this age.
