Introduction

Baking bread together is a wonderful sensory experience for your child. Kneading the dough actively supports fine motor skills and brings joy to the whole family. These homemade rolls are a true breakfast classic made from a simple yeast dough.

Ingredients

  • 250 g bread flour
  • 150 ml lukewarm water
  • 10 g fresh yeast
  • 1 tsp soft butter
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 pinch of sugar for the yeast

Preparation

  1. Dissolve the yeast and sugar in the lukewarm water and let it sit for a few minutes.
  2. Mix the flour, the salt, and the soft butter in a large bowl.
  3. Add the yeast water and knead everything into a smooth dough until it no longer sticks.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about 60 minutes until it doubles in size.
  5. Divide the dough into six equal pieces and shape them into round balls.
  6. Press a star pattern into the top or let older children try the traditional folding technique.
  7. Place the rolls on a baking sheet and let them rest for another 20 minutes.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 220 degrees Celsius for about 15 to 18 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let the rolls cool down completely and check the inside temperature before serving.

Variations and Tips

  • Whole grain twist: Swap half of the white flour with whole wheat flour for extra nutrients.
  • Storage: The baked rolls stay fresh for one to two days in a bread box.
  • Freezing: They freeze beautifully and can be quickly reheated in the oven when needed.
  • For little hands: Shape the dough into long sticks, which are often easier for young children to hold.
  • Family upgrade: Sprinkle some rolls with poppy seeds or sesame seeds for the adults before baking.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten and dairy, which are common allergens. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts. Avoid honey for children under 12 months to prevent the risk of infant botulism. Nuts and seeds must be finely ground for this age group to avoid choking hazards. If you have any concerns about food introductions, consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Homemade rolls provide valuable carbohydrates that give your child energy for an active day. Adding whole grain flour increases the fiber content and provides essential B vitamins. These nutrients support healthy digestion and overall growth during this busy developmental stage.
