Crispy Oat Granola Bars from the Baking Tray

Baking with kids2+y 35 min 4 VeganMedium
Contains: Gluten, Tree nuts

These homemade granola bars are a wonderful snack for busy little explorers aged three and up. Kneading and shaping the dough together supports fine motor skills and is a lot of fun. The bars provide valuable energy for the day and are made entirely without refined sugar.

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe bananas (organic preferred)
  • 150 g quick oats
  • 50 g dried apricots or dates (unsulfured)
  • 2 tbsp mild almond butter or sunflower seed butter
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon)
  • 1 tbsp canola oil or mild coconut oil (for the tray)

This recipe yields about two to three portions for the whole family.

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit). Grease a small baking sheet with the oil or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Mash the bananas in a large bowl with a fork until they form a smooth puree. Cut the dried fruit into very small, fine cubes.
  3. Add the oats, dried fruit, almond butter, and cinnamon to the mashed bananas. Now little hands can eagerly knead the mixture until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Place the dough onto the baking tray and press it flat with your hands or the back of a spoon until it is about one centimeter thick.
  5. Bake the mixture in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes until the edges become slightly golden brown and crispy.
  6. Let the tray cool completely before cutting the baked sheet into handy bars. Always check the temperature before offering the food to ensure your child does not burn their mouth.

Variations and Tips

  • Fruity swap: Simply exchange the apricots for unsweetened cranberries or tiny apple pieces.
  • Storage: The bars will keep for about three to four days in an airtight container in the fridge. They also freeze beautifully and can be thawed individually as needed.
  • For the whole family: Adults can upgrade their own bars after baking with a pinch of sea salt or a drizzle of dark chocolate.
  • Texture adjustments: For younger siblings, you can bake the bars for a slightly shorter time so they remain softer and easier to chew.

Allergy and Safety Notes

This recipe contains oats (gluten) and almonds (tree nuts), which are common allergens. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily spot any potential reactions.

Make sure to offer nuts and seeds to toddlers only as smooth butter or finely ground powder to prevent choking hazards. If you have any concerns about food introductions or suspected allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Value

The oats in this recipe provide valuable fiber and complex carbohydrates that keep little tummies full for longer. Bananas and dried fruits contribute natural energy as well as important potassium. Almond butter contains healthy fats, which are highly beneficial for a child's brain development during this active growth phase.
