Crispy Oven-Baked Campfire Bread
Baking Fun for Little Hands
Baking stick bread together is a wonderful experience for many children aged three and up. The classic dough is simply wrapped around thick wooden skewers and baked comfortably in your home oven. Kneading the dough and rolling it into long snakes supports fine motor skills and is a lot of fun. Children are often very proud to pull the bread they shaped themselves out of the oven, warm and crispy.
Ingredients
For 2 to 3 portions (about 6 small stick breads), you will need the following ingredients:
- 300 g all-purpose flour or spelt flour
- 150 ml warm water
- 1 packet dry yeast (7 g)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 pinch of salt
- 6 thick wooden skewers (or clean, untreated twigs)
Preparation
- Pour the warm water into a bowl and stir in the dry yeast until it dissolves.
- Add the flour, olive oil, and the pinch of salt.
- Knead everything together for about five minutes until you have a smooth and elastic dough.
- Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rest in a warm place for about 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (400 degrees Fahrenheit).
- Divide the dough into six equal pieces and let your child roll them into long snakes.
- Wrap the dough snakes in a spiral around the wooden skewers and press the ends down gently.
- Place the skewers on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake for about 15 minutes until golden brown.
- Allow the bread to cool thoroughly after baking and check the temperature before your child takes a bite.
Variations and Tips
The basic dough is wonderfully easy to adapt to your family's taste. You can mix finely chopped herbs like parsley or a little grated cheese into the dough. This gives the stick bread a particularly savory flavor.
For the rest of the family, you can serve a delicious yogurt dip or some hummus on the side. Leftover baked bread will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about two days. You can also freeze the fully baked bread without any issues and briefly reheat it in the oven when needed.
Allergy and Safety Information
This recipe contains wheat and therefore gluten. It is a good idea to introduce new foods or variations with nuts or seeds one at a time and in small amounts. Make sure your child stays seated while eating with the wooden skewers to avoid any mouth injuries. If you have any concerns about nutrition or introducing new ingredients, always feel free to talk to your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Thanks to the flour, stick bread provides valuable carbohydrates that give your child quick energy for the day. If you use spelt flour or a portion of whole wheat flour, you also increase the fiber content. Fiber is filling and supports healthy digestion.
