Crispy Oven-Baked Sweet Potato Fries for Toddlers
Oven-baked sweet potato fries are a wonderful way to offer your child a healthy snack. They are not only tasty but also packed with important nutrients, making them a great alternative to traditional fries. For children aged three and up, they serve as excellent finger food, supporting fine motor skills as your child grasps and eats.
Ingredients for 2-3 Servings:
- 500 g sweet potatoes (organic quality recommended)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp mild paprika powder
- A small pinch of salt (optional, use sparingly for children over 1 year)
- A small pinch of black pepper (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 200 °C (400 °F) (top/bottom heat) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into sticks about the thickness of a finger. Try to cut the sticks as uniformly as possible to ensure even cooking.
- Place the sweet potato sticks in a large bowl. Add the olive oil, paprika powder, and optional salt and pepper. Mix everything well so that all sweet potato pieces are lightly coated.
- Spread the seasoned sweet potato sticks in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Make sure they do not overlap, which helps them get nice and crispy.
- Bake the fries for about 20-25 minutes in the preheated oven. Flip them once halfway through the baking time to ensure they turn golden brown and crispy on all sides.
- Remove the sweet potato fries from the oven and let them cool briefly before serving them to your child. Always check the temperature to prevent burns.
Variations & Tips:
- Other Vegetables: You can also try this recipe with carrots, parsnips, or zucchini. Cut them into sticks as well and adjust the baking time as needed.
- Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, bake them briefly in the oven to restore their crispiness.
- Adjusting Texture: For younger children who may still prefer softer textures, you can bake the fries a little longer until they are very tender. For older children or the whole family, you might bake them longer for extra crispiness.
- For the Whole Family: For adults or older children, you can intensify the seasoning. Add a little garlic powder, rosemary, or a pinch of cayenne pepper for more heat.
- Dips: Serve the sweet potato fries with a mild herb dip or a homemade sugar-free tomato dip.
Allergy & Safety Notes:
Sweet potatoes and olive oil are generally well-tolerated. As with all new foods, it is advisable to introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts, observing your child's reaction. If you have any concerns about nutrition or potential allergic reactions, please speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information:
Sweet potato fries are an excellent source of beta-carotene, which is converted into Vitamin A in the body and is important for vision and the immune system. They also provide dietary fiber, which promotes healthy digestion, and Vitamin C. These nutrients naturally support your child's growth and development.
