Introduction
These crispy cheese twists are a wonderful, savory snack for little explorers aged three and up. They are easy for small hands to grasp and help practice fine motor skills while nibbling. A quick recipe that fits perfectly into a lunchbox or your next family picnic.
Ingredients
- 1 roll of fresh puff pastry (chilled, approx. 275 g)
- 100 g grated Gouda (or another mild cheese, organic if possible)
- 1 egg (organic)
- 1 tsp sweet paprika powder
- A little sesame seed (optional)
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius top and bottom heat and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Roll out the puff pastry on a work surface and brush it with the beaten egg.
- Evenly distribute the grated cheese and paprika powder over the dough. Sprinkle with a little sesame seed if desired.
- Cut the dough into strips about two centimeters wide. Hold each strip by the ends and gently twist them to create spirals.
- Place the cheese twists on the baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove the twists from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack. Always check the temperature before offering, as the cheese inside can be quite hot.
Variations and Tips
- Hidden Veggies: Sprinkle some very finely grated carrot or zucchini over the dough before twisting it.
- Storage: The cheese twists will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days. Freezing them raw is an option, though they lose some crispness if frozen after baking.
- For the Whole Family: Adults might enjoy a pinch of chili flakes or a stronger cheese like sharp cheddar on their half of the pastry.
- Texture Adjustment: For children who prefer a softer bite, you can substitute the puff pastry with pizza dough.
Allergy and Safety Notes
