Crispy Puff Pastry Cheese Twists to Bake Together
Introduction
Baking together is a lot of fun for many children and builds their confidence in the kitchen. These crispy cheese twists are wonderful for little helpers from age three, as twisting the dough playfully supports fine motor skills. The savory snack is perfect for your next outing, a lunchbox addition, or an afternoon picnic.
Ingredients
- 1 roll of fresh puff pastry (store-bought)
- 100 g grated Gouda cheese (organic if possible)
- 1 egg (medium)
- 1 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp sesame seeds (optional)
- 1 tsp sunflower seeds (optional)
- A pinch of sweet paprika
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (conventional) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Unroll the puff pastry on the work surface and sprinkle it evenly with the paprika.
- Whisk the egg and milk in a small bowl, then brush a thin layer over half of the pastry.
- Spread the grated Gouda evenly over the brushed half of the dough.
- Fold the unbrushed half of the pastry over the cheese half and press down gently at the edges.
- Cut the dough into strips about two centimeters wide using a knife or pizza cutter.
- Your child can now hold each strip by the ends and carefully twist it.
- Place the finished twists on the baking tray, brush with the remaining egg mixture, and sprinkle with sesame or sunflower seeds.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the cheese twists cool down completely and check the temperature before eating to prevent burns.
Variations & Tips
- Hidden Veggies: Sprinkle some very finely grated carrot or zucchini on the dough along with the cheese.
- Storage: The twists will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days. They are less suitable for freezing, as puff pastry often becomes soft after thawing.
- For the Whole Family: Adults can spice up their portion with a pinch of chili flakes or fresh herbs like thyme before baking.
- Adjusting Texture: For younger children, you can leave out the seeds to make chewing easier and reduce any choking hazards.
