Contains: Tree nuts
A crunchy and savory snack that provides valuable omega-3 fatty acids. The combination of walnuts and rosemary offers an exciting flavor experience for children from three years of age. At the same time, this recipe makes excellent brain food for busy learning afternoons.
Ingredients
- 200 g walnut halves (organic if possible)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp fresh rosemary (very finely chopped)
- A small pinch of sea salt (use sparingly for children)
Portion size: 2 to 3 servings
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius (320 degrees Fahrenheit).
- In a bowl, toss the walnuts with the olive oil, finely chopped rosemary, and a small pinch of sea salt.
- Spread the coated nuts evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Roast in the preheated oven for about 10 to 12 minutes until they become fragrant.
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the nuts cool completely. Always check the temperature before offering them to your child.
Variations & Tips
- You can easily swap the rosemary for mild paprika or a touch of cinnamon.
- Store the cooled nuts in an airtight glass jar at room temperature for about one to two weeks (freezing is not necessary here).
- Whole nuts are not suitable for younger children who are still learning to chew thoroughly. For them, you can offer smooth walnut butter on a piece of bread instead.
- Parents can season their own portion with a bit more salt or a pinch of chili flakes after baking.
Allergy & Safety Information
- Walnuts are tree nuts (EU allergen) and can trigger allergic reactions.
- Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to monitor for any reactions.
- Whole nuts pose a significant choking hazard for toddlers. They are only suitable once your child can chew and swallow confidently.
- If you have any uncertainties about introducing new foods or your child's diet, please consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Walnuts are an excellent source of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, which play a role in brain development. They also provide valuable fiber and plant protein. These nutrients wonderfully support your child during their daily adventures.
