Knusprige Dinkel-Grissini zum Knabbern: Backen mit Kindern

Crispy Spelt Grissini for Snacking: Baking with Kids

Baking with kids2+y 40 min 4 VeganMedium
Contains: Gluten, Sesame

Introduction

This simple recipe for spelt grissini is wonderful for getting active together in the kitchen. Children aged three and older often have great fun kneading the soft dough and rolling long snakes, which gently supports their fine motor skills. These homemade breadsticks also provide valuable energy for an active day and require absolutely no unnecessary additives.

Ingredients

  • 250 g spelt flour (type 630 or whole wheat, organic if possible)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp mild salt (perfectly fine for children over 3 years)
  • 4 tbsp mild olive oil
  • 120 ml lukewarm water
  • A little water for brushing
  • Optional: 1 tbsp sesame seeds, mild herbs (like thyme or oregano) for sprinkling

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (conventional heat) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Put the spelt flour, baking powder, and salt into a large bowl and mix the dry ingredients well.
  3. Add the olive oil and lukewarm water, then knead everything until a smooth, pliable dough forms.
  4. Let your child tear off small pieces of dough and roll them into long, thin snakes on a lightly floured surface.
  5. Place the dough snakes on the baking sheet, brush them with a little water, and sprinkle with sesame seeds or herbs as desired.
  6. Bake the grissini in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy.
  7. Allow the sticks to cool completely before snacking, and always test the temperature before your child takes a bite.

Variations & Tips

  • Vegetable variation: Mix two tablespoons of finely grated carrots or a little tomato paste into the dough to create a colorful version.
  • Storage: The cooled grissini will easily keep for up to five days in an airtight container at room temperature. Freezing the raw dough is also possible, so you can quickly bake a fresh batch when needed.
  • Adjusting texture: For a slightly softer snacking experience, you can roll the sticks a little thicker and shorten the baking time by a few minutes.
  • For the whole family: Adults often enjoy dipping the crispy sticks into a savory herb quark or hummus.

Allergy & Safety

This recipe contains gluten (spelt flour) and possibly sesame, both of which are common allergens. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions. When baking for young children, make sure seeds like sesame stick well to the dough to avoid choking hazards, or simply leave them out if you have concerns. If you have any uncertainties about your child's diet or suspect food intolerances, it is always a good idea to talk to your pediatrician.

Nutrition

Spelt flour contains valuable fiber and complex carbohydrates, providing long-lasting energy for a busy day. The olive oil contributes unsaturated fatty acids, which are beneficial for general development. A healthy, homemade snack that requires absolutely no hidden sugars.
