Date and Almond Energy Balls: A Delicious Snack for Kids
Introduction
These no-bake energy balls made from blended dates and almonds are a wonderful snack for active children aged three and older. They provide quick fuel for the playground, before sports, or just as a tasty treat in between meals. The natural sweetness requires absolutely no refined sugar, making this snack very popular with many families.
Ingredients
For about 12 to 15 balls (roughly 2 to 3 portions) you will need:
- 150 g soft dates (pitted, organic preferred)
- 100 g ground almonds
- 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp almond butter (no added ingredients)
- 2 tbsp rolled oats (fine or quick oats)
- Optional: desiccated coconut or extra cocoa powder for rolling
Preparation
- Place the pitted dates into a food processor or a strong blender. Blend the dates until they form a sticky, cohesive paste.
- Add the ground almonds, cocoa powder, almond butter, and rolled oats. Mix everything on medium speed for about one to two minutes until the ingredients are well combined.
- Scoop out small portions of the mixture using a teaspoon. Roll them into bite-sized balls using slightly dampened hands.
- If desired, roll the finished balls in desiccated coconut or a little cocoa powder for a fun coating.
- Place the balls in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes so they can firm up. Try one before serving to check the texture and temperature for your child.
Variations & Tips
- Flavor Twist: Simply swap the ground almonds for ground hazelnuts or cashew flour to create a new taste.
- Fruity Note: Adding a teaspoon of organic orange zest gives the energy balls a lovely, bright flavor.
- Storage: Stored in an airtight container in the fridge, these balls will keep fresh for up to a week.
- Freezing: You can easily freeze the balls for up to three months and thaw them individually at room temperature when needed.
- For the Whole Family: Adults often love these little treats alongside their afternoon coffee, perhaps enhanced with a pinch of cinnamon.
Allergy & Safety Information
This recipe contains almonds (tree nuts), which are common allergens. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to carefully observe any potential reactions in your child. Ensure that nuts for young children are always finely ground or served as a smooth butter, as whole or coarsely chopped nuts pose a choking hazard. If you have any uncertainties about your child's diet or potential allergies, always speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Dates are excellent sources of energy and contain valuable dietary fiber, which supports healthy digestion. Almonds contribute plant-based proteins and healthy fats that are important for growth and brain development. The unsweetened cocoa also provides a dose of iron and magnesium, making this snack a nutrient-rich choice for busy days.
