DIY Whole Wheat Wraps with Bell Peppers, Corn, and Feta for the Family
Introduction
Colorful wraps that everyone can fill themselves turn mealtime into a fun, interactive experience for the whole family. Children from three years old love putting together their own meals, which playfully encourages their independence. The combination of fresh vegetables and whole grains provides wonderful energy for active afternoons.
Ingredients
This recipe serves 2 to 3 people. Whenever possible, choose organic options for the vegetables and dairy products.
- 4 whole wheat tortillas (wraps)
- 1 red bell pepper
- 1 yellow bell pepper
- 150 g sweet corn (canned or jarred, unsweetened)
- 150 g feta cheese (made from pasteurized milk)
- 150 g plain yogurt (whole milk, 3.5% fat)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp mild herbs (for example, finely chopped parsley or chives)
- A squeeze of lemon juice
Preparation
- Prepare the vegetables: Wash the red and yellow bell peppers, remove the seeds, and cut them into thin strips.
- Drain the sweet corn well in a sieve.
- Crumble the feta into small, bite-sized pieces using your hands and place them in a small bowl.
- For the mild sauce, stir the plain yogurt with the olive oil, the fine herbs, and a squeeze of lemon juice until smooth.
- Warm the whole wheat wraps briefly according to the package instructions, for example for about 30 seconds in the microwave or briefly in a dry pan.
- Arrange all ingredients in small bowls on the table so everyone can fill their own wrap. Before eating, always check briefly to ensure the wraps are not too hot for your child.
Variations & Tips
- Swap the vegetables: Instead of bell peppers, mild grated carrots or pan-fried zucchini slices work very well.
- Storage: You can store leftover ingredients separately in airtight containers in the fridge for up to two days. The wraps themselves freeze well and can be thawed individually as needed.
- Adjust the texture: For children who still find raw bell peppers a bit difficult to chew, simply sauté the pepper strips in a little oil for about five minutes until soft.
- Family tip: Adults and older siblings can easily spice up their own wraps at the table with some chili, garlic, or fresh arugula.
Allergy & Safety Information
This recipe contains gluten from the wraps and dairy products from the feta and yogurt, which are common allergens. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions. Make sure the feta cheese is made from pasteurized milk. If you have any uncertainties about your child's diet or potential allergies, it is always best to speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
The whole wheat wraps and sweet corn provide plenty of fiber, which supports healthy digestion and keeps little tummies full for a long time. Fresh bell peppers are a wonderful source of vitamin C, which is especially valuable when paired with iron-rich foods. The feta and yogurt also contribute important calcium, which plays a big role in bone growth at this age.
