Festive Apple Cinnamon Baby Waffles
Introduction
These soft waffles are completely free of added sugar, getting their gentle sweetness entirely from fine apple puree. A delicate hint of Ceylon cinnamon brings a festive holiday spirit to the table, making mealtime a truly lovely shared experience for the whole family. They are a wonderful way to introduce your child to new, comforting winter flavors. At the same time, the soft texture offers a great opportunity for little hands to practice their grasping skills.
Ingredients
- 100 g unsweetened apple puree (organic if possible)
- 50 g fine oat flour (or quick oats blended into a fine powder)
- 1 tbsp rapeseed oil (or canola oil, which provides valuable fatty acids)
- 1 small pinch of Ceylon cinnamon
- 30 ml water, breastmilk, or formula
Preparation
- Place the apple puree, oat flour, oil, Ceylon cinnamon, and your chosen liquid into a medium-sized bowl. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly with a whisk until a smooth, thick batter forms.
- Let the batter rest at room temperature for about 10 minutes. This resting time allows the oat flour to absorb the liquid and soften nicely.
- Preheat your waffle iron to a medium heat setting. If necessary, lightly grease the baking plates with a little oil to prevent the batter from sticking.
- Spoon the batter into the waffle iron and bake for about 5 minutes. The waffles are ready when they feel soft to the touch and have taken on a light golden-brown color.
- Important: Let the waffles cool completely on a wire rack. Always test the temperature on the inside of your wrist just to be safe before offering any to your child.
Variations & Tips
- Adjusting the texture: For the very first tastes of solid food, you can easily puree a cooled piece of waffle with some breastmilk or formula to create a smooth texture. Once your child is ready for finger food, the waffles make a wonderful snack when cut into easy-to-grasp strips.
- Fruity twist: This recipe is highly adaptable. Simply swap the apple puree for a mild pear puree or fine peach puree for a different flavor profile.
- Storage: The baked waffles will keep fresh in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. They also freeze beautifully, allowing you to thaw them individually in the toaster whenever needed.
- For the whole family: Adults and older siblings can easily customize their portions by topping the waffles with powdered sugar, maple syrup, or fresh berries.
Allergy & Safety Information
- This recipe is naturally free from common allergens like egg or cow's milk. Please note, however, that oats can naturally contain traces of gluten.
- Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions (the trusted three-day rule).
- Make sure to use Ceylon cinnamon exclusively, as it is much gentler, lower in coumarin, and safer for babies than standard Cassia cinnamon.
- Avoid honey entirely during the first year of life, as it can contain dangerous bacteria that lead to serious infections.
- If you have any uncertainties about starting solids or potential food intolerances, please always consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
The oats in this recipe provide valuable plant-based iron, which plays an important role in blood formation and cognitive development. Thanks to the natural vitamin C from the apple puree, this plant-based iron is absorbed especially well by the body. Additionally, the gentle dietary fiber from the oats supports healthy digestion and helps keep little tummies comfortably full. This gently supports your child's nutrition in a natural and tasty way.
