Baking Fun for the Family

This recipe for fluffy cinnamon rolls is wonderful for cozy afternoons in the family kitchen. Children from three years old often take great joy in kneading and shaping the soft, warm yeast dough with their hands. Baking together is a fantastic sensory experience. Rolling out the dough and spreading the filling playfully supports the fine motor skills of little bakers. The delicious scent of cinnamon and warm dough wafting from the oven builds anticipation for a sweet treat for the whole family.

Ingredients

This recipe makes about six to eight small cinnamon rolls. This is an ideal portion for two to three people to share in the afternoon.

  • 250 g wheat flour
  • 125 ml lukewarm milk
  • 30 g soft butter for the dough
  • 1 tsp dry yeast
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • For the filling: 30 g soft butter, 1 tbsp mild cinnamon, 2 tbsp fine sugar
  • For the frosting: 100 g plain cream cheese, 1 tbsp maple syrup or powdered sugar

Preparation

  1. Place the wheat flour, lukewarm milk, soft butter, dry yeast, and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Combine the ingredients with a spoon first, then knead them thoroughly.
  3. Knead the dough until a smooth, supple mass forms that no longer sticks to your fingers.
  4. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel.
  5. Let the dough rest in a warm, draft-free place for about 60 minutes until it has visibly doubled in size.
  6. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and roll it out into a rectangle using a rolling pin.
  7. Spread the soft butter for the filling evenly over the rolled-out dough.
  8. Generously sprinkle the buttered surface with the cinnamon and sugar mixture.
  9. Gently roll the dough up from the long side to create a long log.
  10. Cut the log into slices about three centimeters thick and place them slightly apart in a greased baking dish.
  11. Bake the cinnamon rolls in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
  12. For the frosting, stir the plain cream cheese with the maple syrup until a creamy texture is achieved.
  13. Let the rolls cool down well, spread with the frosting, and always check the temperature before serving.

Variations and Tips

  • Fruity twist: A finely grated apple in the filling makes the rolls extra moist and adds a touch of natural sweetness.
  • Alternative shapes: Instead of cutting rolls, you can cut the dough into strips and shape them into little knots.
  • Storage: The finished cinnamon rolls stay wonderfully fresh in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about two days.
  • Freezing: Without the frosting, the baked rolls freeze beautifully and can be quickly reheated in the oven when needed.
  • For adults: Chopped walnuts or pecans in the filling add a great crunch for the older family members.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten from the wheat flour and milk protein from the butter, milk, and cream cheese. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions your child might have. Always offer nuts to young children finely ground, as whole pieces or coarse chunks pose a choking hazard. Always ensure your child is sitting upright while eating. If you have any uncertainties about diet, introducing solid foods, or potential allergies, it is best to speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Cinnamon rolls are a sweet treat for special, cozy occasions and shared afternoons. They provide quick energy for active children through the flour and milk. The cream cheese and milk also contribute a portion of calcium, which is important for the body. Baking together also fosters a relaxed and joyful relationship with food. Enjoyed in moderation, such homemade treats fit wonderfully into a varied and balanced family diet.
