Fluffy Mini Milk Rolls for Baking with Kids

A fluffy yeast dough with milk and a touch of butter, shaped into bite-sized rolls. Children love rolling the small dough balls and placing them on the tray. Baking together supports fine motor skills and brings a lot of joy to the kitchen. These rolls provide great energy for active days and taste wonderful plain or with a mild spread.

Ingredients

  • 250 g spelt flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • 120 ml cow's milk (lukewarm)
  • 30 g soft butter
  • 1 tsp honey (safe from 12 months) or agave syrup
  • 0.5 cube fresh yeast (approx. 20 g) or 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Gently warm the milk until it is lukewarm. Dissolve the yeast and honey or agave syrup in the warm milk.
  2. Place the flour, soft butter, and a pinch of salt into a mixing bowl. Pour in the yeast mixture.
  3. Knead everything for about five to ten minutes until a smooth, supple dough forms. Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about an hour, until it doubles in size.
  4. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit). Shape the dough into small, bite-sized balls and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake the rolls for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Let them cool completely and always check the inside temperature before serving to your child.

Variations and Tips

  • Fruity twist: Knead a handful of finely chopped, unsulfured raisins into the dough.
  • Storage: The rolls stay fresh in an airtight container in the fridge for about two to three days. They also freeze beautifully, allowing you to thaw individual rolls as needed.
  • For the whole family: Parents can easily enjoy these versatile rolls at the family table with savory cheese or a bold spread.
  • Texture adjustment: For an even softer texture, you can store the baked rolls in a slightly damp cloth after they have cooled down.

Allergy and Safety Notes

This recipe contains gluten from the flour and dairy from the butter and cow's milk. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to carefully monitor for any reactions. Honey is safe for children over twelve months, but poses a risk of infant botulism before that age. If you have any uncertainties about your child's diet or introducing new foods, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Spelt flour provides valuable carbohydrates and fiber, offering long-lasting energy for busy toddlers. The cow's milk contributes essential calcium, which supports healthy bone development during this active growth phase. A wonderful, mild addition that enriches a varied diet at the family table.
