Fruity Blackberry Apple Crumble for Toddlers
This fruity blackberry and apple crumble brings the warm flavors of late summer and early fall straight to the family table. It relies primarily on the natural sweetness of the ripe fruit, requires very little added sweetener, and offers a wonderful combination of soft fruit and a slightly crunchy topping. For many families, it is a true comfort food on cooler days. The oats provide valuable energy, while the berries add plenty of vitamins for little explorers. Moreover, eating together at the family table is a wonderful moment where your child can discover new textures and flavors in a relaxed environment.
Ingredients
For about 2 to 3 portions, you will need the following ingredients (choose organic quality where possible):
- 2 mild apples (such as Gala or Elstar)
- 150 g fresh blackberries
- 1 tsp mild lemon juice
- 1 small pinch of cinnamon (preferably Ceylon cinnamon)
- 50 g soft butter
- 40 g spelt flour (or fine whole wheat flour)
- 40 g rolled oats (fine)
- 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (standard bake setting, top and bottom heat). Lightly grease a small baking dish with a little butter.
- Wash the apples thoroughly, peel, core, and cut them into small, bite-sized cubes. Gently wash the fresh blackberries and let them drain well in a sieve.
- Mix the apple cubes and the blackberries in the prepared baking dish. Drizzle the lemon juice and a pinch of Ceylon cinnamon over the fruit, and toss everything well with a spoon.
- In a separate bowl, combine the soft butter, spelt flour, fine rolled oats, and honey (or maple syrup). Quickly knead everything with your hands until you get a crumbly topping.
- Spread the finished crumble mixture evenly over the fruit in the baking dish.
- Bake the crumble in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes, until the fruit is softly stewed and the topping has taken on a beautiful golden-brown color.
- Remove the dish from the oven and make sure to let it cool down significantly. Always test the temperature before feeding, as the fruit underneath often remains very hot for quite a while.
Variations & Tips
- Fruity alternatives: Instead of blackberries, raspberries or blueberries pair beautifully with the apples. In winter, you can easily adapt the recipe by using pears and plums.
- Vary the spices: Besides Ceylon cinnamon, you can also use a small pinch of ground real vanilla. This gives the dish a natural, sweet note without any additional sugar.
- Storage: The crumble keeps well in the fridge for up to two days when covered. You can also freeze it in small containers in individual portions and gently reheat it when needed.
- Adjusting the texture: For children who are still practicing chewing firmer pieces, you can simply mash the baked fruit slightly with a fork before serving.
- Tip for the whole family: Adults and older siblings often love enjoying this warm, fruity dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a generous dollop of plain yogurt.
Allergy & Safety Information
This recipe contains gluten (from the spelt flour and oats) as well as dairy (from the butter). Always introduce new ingredients into your child's diet one at a time and in small amounts, so you can easily monitor for any potential allergic reactions.
A particularly important note regarding honey: Children under twelve months must not eat honey due to the risk of dangerous infant botulism. If making this for younger children, simply use a little unsweetened applesauce to sweeten it instead, or leave the sweetener out entirely.
If you have any questions or concerns about introducing new foods or toddler nutrition in general, it is always best to consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
The combination of oats and spelt flour provides valuable complex carbohydrates and fiber, which are filling and support healthy digestion. The fresh blackberries and apples contribute important vitamin C, which in turn helps the body optimally absorb the iron from the oats. This gives your child a wonderfully nutrient-dense meal that provides steady energy for an active and joyful day.
