Fruity Blueberry, Banana, and Spelt Porridge for Starting Solids

Solids intro5+m 15 min 4 VeganEasy
Contains: Gluten

Introduction

This gentle fruit and cereal porridge is a wonderful afternoon option once your child has started exploring solid foods. The combination of fine spelt flakes, creamy banana, and blueberries creates a pleasant texture and a light, natural sweetness. It helps your child discover new flavors at their own pace while providing valuable energy for the rest of the day.

Ingredients

This recipe makes about two to three small portions for early solid feeding:

  • 100 ml water (or age-appropriate milk)
  • 2 tablespoons quick-cooking spelt flakes (approx. 20 g)
  • 0.5 ripe banana (approx. 50 g)
  • 30 g blueberries (fresh or unsweetened frozen, organic if possible)
  • 1 teaspoon mild rapeseed oil (canola oil)

Preparation

  1. Wash the fresh blueberries thoroughly under running water, or let frozen berries thaw slightly. Mash the half banana on a plate with a fork until it becomes a smooth puree.
  2. Place the water and blueberries in a small pot and let them simmer gently for three to five minutes. This softens the blueberries and helps them burst open slightly.
  3. Remove the pot from the heat and whisk in the spelt flakes. Let the porridge swell briefly until a smooth and creamy consistency forms.
  4. Fold the mashed banana and the rapeseed oil into the warm porridge. If needed, blend the mixture with an immersion blender to ensure there are no lumps left and the texture is completely smooth.
  5. Let the porridge cool down to body temperature. Always test the temperature on your own wrist before feeding your child.

Variations and Tips

  • Different fruit: You can easily swap the blueberries for softly steamed apples or pears to bring some variety to the menu.
  • Storage: The porridge keeps well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. Freezing works nicely in ice cube trays, allowing you to quickly thaw small portions as needed.
  • Adjusting texture: For the very first tastes, you can add a little more water to make the porridge thinner. As your child grows to enjoy more texture, simply mashing the fruit with a fork will be perfectly fine.
  • For parents: Make a double batch and add some chopped nuts and a dollop of yogurt to your own bowl for a quick snack.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten from the spelt flakes. Always introduce new ingredients like gluten or new fruits one at a time and in small amounts, so you can easily observe any potential reactions.

Completely avoid honey during the first year of life, as it can carry dangerous bacteria that lead to infant botulism. If you have any concerns about starting solids or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Spelt provides valuable complex carbohydrates and serves as a good source of plant-based iron. The vitamin C from the blueberries helps the body absorb this iron much more effectively. The banana also offers quick energy and makes the porridge pleasantly filling.
